November 17, 2015
Joseph S. “Joe” Hollister, 78, of Mt. Joy Road, Mt. Joy, PA, passed away unexpectedly at Lancaster Regional Hospital on Tuesday, November 17, 2015. He was the husband of Elizabeth L. Becker Hollister and they would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on November 22nd. He was the son of the late Samuel E. and Anne Cantwell Hollister.
Born in Fountain Springs, PA, he was a graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and a member of Mary Mother of the Church, Mt. Joy. He received the Red Rose Award on June 17, 1998 for his kindness and generous spirit. He loved to fish, hunt, was a boxer at one time, and was passionate about reading. He enjoyed history and was an excellent handyman, able to make a part for a part. He will be remembered for his selfless personality as he would help out anyone, often bringing someone home when their car broke down or offering his own car to someone. Though direct and tough, you knew where you stood with Joe, and his sense of humor and kindness will hold a special place in everyone’s heart. Most of all, he loved his family.
In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, he is survived by seven children, Anne Marie, wife of Jeffrey Witmer, Butler, TN, Joseph II, husband of Patricia A. Hollister, Conestoga, PA, Samuel E., husband of Jolynn M. Hollister, Lititz, PA, Michael S. Hollister, Conestoga, PA, Martin J., husband of Donna M. Hollister, Columbia, PA, Mary E., wife of Timothy R. Reilly, Willow Street, PA, and William F., husband of Terri L. Hollister, Washington Boro, PA; 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and two siblings, Robert M., husband of the late Carolyn Hollister, and Ann H., wife of the late Joseph Schreder, both of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by a great grand-daughter, Katie Mae.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial from St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 501 East Orange Street, Lancaster, PA 17602 on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Pang S. Tcheou Celebrant. The family will receive friends at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543 on Monday, November 23, 2015 from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Although we only knew Joe for a short time, he always welcomed us as part of the family and shared his family with us. Some of our special memories are when he and Betty spent the weekend with us and he was so comfortable he slept in. We loved hearing him telling stories of his past. Heaven has certainly gained a special angel, and will miss him here. Our prayers are with you all. Love Dave and Mary Lynn

To Betty Hollister and family, my heart goes out to everyone… Betty, Anne, Joe Jr, Sam, Mike, Marty Mary and Bill. I loved your Dad and husband so much. Joe was a wonderful generous man and gave so much to so many. He deserves heaven and he fought so hard to get there. He always wanted his children to follow hiim and your mom in their faith and I am sure he will be praying for that even in heaven. God loves you all and Blest you with a wonderful father and husband. A great role model. I know you will do him proud. I love you all.

Mrs. H., Anne, Joe, Sam, Mike, Marty, Mary & Bill,
You are in my thoughts and prayers at this sad time. So many wonderful memories. I just shared one a few days ago with a co-worker – it had to do with mint chocolate chip ice cream 🙂 And I always share memories of Maine. Such a wonderful family and Joe was an incredible example of how we should treat each other. I am so sorry for your loss.
Love,
Rose (Tignanelli) Sekely
