Richard A. Pflumm, 88

March 05, 2022

Richard A. Pflumm, 88, of Lancaster, Pa passed away at home on March 5, 2022 with his family by his side. “Dick” was born in White Plains, NY to the late Richard Pflumm and Matilda (Stadler) Pflumm. They resided in Byram, Connecticut.

Dick graduated from Greenwich High School, Greenwich, Connecticut where he met his future wife, Louise. After high school he attended the University of Connecticut for three years before being drafted in the Army. He had a passion for baseball and was a starting pitcher for his team while in high school, college and in the Army. Dick also enjoyed playing golf.

While on military leave from his base in Hawaii, Dick proposed to Louise Murphy. He earned an honorable discharge from the Army, and he and Louise were married on September 15, 1956. Lancaster, Pennsylvania became their new home where they started their family. He began a job as a plant manager at Jones and Laughlin Steel Company and attended classes in the evening at Franklin and Marshall College where he earned a business degree. When Jones and Laughlin closed, he bought part ownership of the former Moen and Patton Corporation in Lancaster. In 1975, Dick decided to venture on his own and started Lancaster Container Inc. in Washington Boro where he made steel containers for Armstrong Industries. Eventually he expanded the business and it continues to thrive today.

After their third child was born, Louise was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. To everyone who knew Dick, he was the most loving and compassionate husband and caretaker to Louise. Throughout the progression of her disease, he never left her side. They continued to travel to various countries, enjoyed 54 winters in Key West, and summers making memories with friends and family at their pool on the farm. Their Fourth of July parties were memorable to all!

Dick is survived by his children David J. Pflumm, Millersville, Coreen M Pflumm-Overmeyer ( Gordon), Millersville, and grandchildren Abigail (Pflumm) Snavely ( Nick), Conestoga, Keegan Pflumm( Rachel), Lancaster, Elizabeth (Pflumm) Groff (Randy), Mansfield, GA, Austin Overmeyer (Martha), Posquosin VA, Chelsea Overmeyer, fiancée Mark Whiteside, Philadelphia, Kara Ann (Overmeyer) Hicklin (William), Lancaster, great grandchildren Henrik and Grant Snavely, Chase and Hazel June Groff, Claire, Connor, and Reagan Overmeyer, and Murphy Mae Hicklin.

All are invited to Richard’s Mass of Christian burial on March 9, 2022 at 11:00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church 440 St. Joseph’s Street Lancaster, Pa. There will be a mass but no viewing or greeting at the family’s request. Final farewell commendation will be at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Richard’s memory to the MS Society or the Alzheimer’s Society.

Dear Dave, Billy & Cory,  Please accept my deepest sympathy,  Your parents were two of our favorite people.  Your Dad always had that cute little smile when he made funny comments, which were often.  We will always remember their fabulous 4th of July Picnics that they hosted for years for 3 generations.  Fabulous Memories!! God & your Mother will welcome him with open arms.  Love, Mary Anne Aichele & all of our children.

I was honored and privileged to be included in Mr. Pflumm’s tennis group for a few years.  There was always a spirited conversation going on about how to solve the world’s problems and I’ll always cherish those evenings under the lights.  It’s difficult to see the Old Guard fade away but the amazing stories they told will live on in our memories.  They took fun and adventure to a way higher level.

We feel honored to have known Dick and Louise Pflumm and their family and had many fun and memorable times at their famous parties! Dick’s smile was contagious and always welcoming. He will be remembered fondly by many.

Dick loved life and he loved people. Those qualities drew many people to him, I think because he was an example of how we should live. Dick had a mischievous gleam in his eye and the wonderful smirk on his face was almost permanent. We spent many a night together listening to live music in Key West and days by the pool. I grew to truly love the man whose path I was fortunate to cross by happenstance and share briefly. I will continue to miss my friend Dick but will always remember him and the example he set. He’s what loving one’s neighbors looks like.

Dick was a special individual who had a profound impact on my life.  He was a true gentleman in every way and showed me what true love looks like.  Dick and Louise were very generous to me and my family and I am grateful to them and the entire Pflumm family for including us in their lives.

Uncle Dick and Aunt Louise were a treasured part of the extended family.
I was always impressed by uncle Dick’s work ethic, sociability, and especially the way he cared for his wife over the decades. I have no doubt he will be remembered fondly by not just his family but by his many friends.

Pop pop was one of a kind. He treated our children like his own grandchildren. He always asked about us, work, the kids. What a caring man who would do anything for anyone.
He left an impact on all our lives. And the care he gave Louise was nothing short of amazing.
Prayers to all his family and there will be many smiles as we remember Pop Pop:)

Your Dad and your Mother were very special people and a true inspiration to
any married couple.  We enjoyed them both so much at parties and loved talking to them about Key West.
They are together again and I am sure that reunion was so special.
May the fact that they are together again in Heaven bring you solace.
Our sincere sympathies.
