David Thomas Humphrey, 76
February 16, 2024
On Friday, February 16, 2024, David Thomas Humphrey, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, entered into the kingdom of Heaven. David was born in Buffalo, New York to Thomas Ramsey Humphrey, M.D and Helaine J. Saemenes. He spent his childhood in Africa where his father was stationed as a medical missionary. David and his family would eventually relocate back to the United States spending time in New York, Michigan, California, and Florida. He graduated from Pepperdine University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and would go on to earn two master’s degrees from Pepperdine University and the University of La Verne. David was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years in the Los Angeles County School District system. He spent his teaching career focused on the education, integration, and advocacy of children with special needs. In 1967, David married Beverly (Harrison) Voss and moved to California. They had four children: Jennifer Hudak (Laurence), Christine Humphrey, M.D., Jonathan Humphrey (Amy), and Timothy Humphrey. Later in life, David and Beverly would relocate to Virginia and then Pennsylvania to be closer to their seven grandchildren: Katherine Hudak Maradiaga (Anthony), Bryce Humphrey, Madeline Hudak Miller (Ethan), Hannah Humphrey, Carson Humphrey, Tyler Humphrey, and Owen Humphrey. David’s greatest pride and joy was his children, grandchildren and two new great-grandchildren, Thomas David Miller, and Helaine Frances Maradiaga. David is also survived by his sister-in-law, Barbara Douglass and her son, David, as well as the extended Harrison family in Virginia.
David will be remembered by his family as a patient, loving, and dedicated father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was always there encouraging, supporting, and listening. David and Beverly shared a mutual interest and passion for genealogy researching and sharing family stories and history with others. David lived a life centered around his family and was a living example of Christ’s unconditional love. He often shared with others to remember and follow “the words in red.”
Beyond his immediate family and loving wife, David is survived by close friends from his time in Africa, extended family, and by the children he spent over 30 years teaching.
David is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Humphrey, and his grandson Matthew Humphrey.
