Condolences to the Family
May 08, 2024
Our deepest condolences to Erma and all the Mast children and their families. A shining light in all of your lives has gone out, but its glow will continue eternally in all of your hearts.
Don was blessed to live a long life, and a life that was filled with many wonderful experiences and accomplishments. Some things that come to mind when the two of us think of Don include: his love of family, his love for teaching students, working for civil rights and world peace, making excellent use of discarded and unwanted items, being a handy fix it person, loving to participate in singalongs, enjoying playing the guitar, enjoying playing card games, building the magnificent music room at 528 Calhoun Street in Woodstock, and hosting with Eunice the beloved first Saturday monthly singalongs and open mics at their home.
Don and Euncie’s home and then Don and Erma’s home was affectionately referred to as Masthouse. Masthouse was truly a musical and fellowship heaven for the many hundreds of McHenry County Illinois and Chicagoland residents who attended the Masthouse monthly first Saturday singalongs and open mics during the thirty year period from Septmber 1980 to September 2010. Masthouse was not only a blessing for the audiences, it also provided a unique and important forum for neophyte open mic participants. It allowed them to grow in experience and skill in an atmosphere of encouragement and acceptance. Masthouse laid the foundation for the vibrant music community that now exists in McHenry County Illinois.
For the two of us, going to Masthouse on the first Saturday of the month between June 1981 and September 2010 was one of our greatest life blessings. We are so grateful that our life paths crossed with the life paths of Don, Eunice, and Erma.

My condolences to the Mast family and friends. Don was a special and kind man. When I instantly became a mom to my 5 year old nephew, he and Peter came through Oregon to spend time with my nephew and I. My nephew who is now in his mid 30’s has fond memories of flying kites with Don and Peter, running and wrestling and singing together. I have good memories too. I have been so fortunate to have known Don for decades and learned so much about kindness and intentional living from him. Peace be with you Don, and with your loved ones. Alivia
