October 25, 2024

Alan Lloyd Dolge, 84, residing in Manheim, PA, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024, surrounded by loved ones at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Norwalk, CT, he was the son of the late Karl Lloyd and Ruth McKane Dolge of Westport, CT. He traveled with the Navy until settling in Sparta, NJ for 18 years. Alan then built his forever home in Traces of Lattimore, Dingmans Ferry, PA where he resided for over 37 years.

Alan is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Patricia VanHook Dolge, his two daughters by Carole Collins Dolge: Kelly Smith and her husband James, Ginger Wolford and her husband Paul, five grandchildren, Shannon, Kendall (and husband Connor Mahaffey), Jonathan, Hailey, Joshua, and one great-granddaughter, Juniper.

Also surviving are two brothers, Charles “Chuck” Dolge of Winston-Salem, NC, and Tracy Dolge of Boston, MA.

Alan was a veteran, a Commander honorably serving his country in the US Navy as a Naval Aviator after graduating from Franklin and Marshall College. Commander Dolge service with Patrol Squadron 26 in Brunswick, ME before moving to the VP-66 Squadron while in the Reserves flying P-2 and P-3 sub-seekers out of Willow Grove, PA. He retired from the Navy after 22 years of service.

Simultaneously, when Alan moved from Active Duty to Reserves, he began flying for Trans World Airlines (TWA) retiring after 33 years at the age of 60 in 2000.

After retirement, he became engaged in serving his community. He was an avid conservationist working alongside the Delaware Highlands Conservancy to protect acres of natural habitat in the Poconos. With this, he also served as the President of the Traces of Lattimore Community (HOA) for 10 years and was instrumental is starting the United Way of Pike County where he served as President. It was through this that he was deemed “Most Influential People in Pike County.”

His office, littered with fundraising materials and topographic maps, decorated with medals, model airplanes and a marionette of his likeness, was a proud display of his purpose, drive, and accomplishments.

In the wake of his loss, his family and friends will remember his sharp wit, his distinct laugh, and his baritone air as rich as the red wines that he collected. He was a man of many and varied talents and interests.

Condolences to the Family

Very sorry to learn of Al’s passing. I knew him well back in our TWA days. We enjoyed a little political banter and many varied discussions over an ale or two. My condolences to his wife and family. Bless you all.

Alan Dolge. One of a kind,  from the moment we met at Saugatuck Elementary School in Westport, Connecticut in 1946. We both went on the air. You in a plane, I on TV. As adults we didn’t see much of each other, but we didn’t have to. I knew you were always the wonderful guy you were almost 80 years ago and we would be best friends ’til the end. KitChristopher Jones New York City

Thanks for the memories, Alan! As Anne said, you were a great brother-in-law and we will miss you! You were so full of wisdom and wise cracks, story teller extraordinaire, a excellent wine connoisseur and a person who kept more memorabilia then even I have!!  But most of all, you loved and cherished one of the most dearest hearts, Patty. You will be greatly missed by all your family and friends, but most of all, her.
