Alan R. Alexander, DMD, MD, 71 years old of Lancaster, PA, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He fought a courageous battle with bladder cancer for almost a year.
He was born in Winsted, CT to the late Gordon and Leona Alexander. He was a graduate of Newington High School in Newington, CT. He continued his education at the University of CT for his Bachelors followed by Dental and Medical School. He did his internship at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut and then went to Bay State Medical Center, associated with Tufts University, to do his residency in Radiology. After completing his residency, he did his Fellowship in Neuroradiology at George Washington University in D.C.
After completing all his training, he joined a practice at St. Joseph’s Hospital and then Lancaster Regional Hospital for 27 years prior to his retirement in 2011.
After his retirement, Alan enjoyed volunteering at Longwood Gardens where he had passed two certificate courses in Botany. He also grew many orchids of all types and had two greenhouses at one time. Another hobby was woodworking and he made some exceptional mahogany reproductions. Keeping with his horticultural interest, he created beautiful islands with a variety of trees, shrubs and plantings. He also had a fascination with salt water fish and recently purchased a large Salt Water Tank with fish and coral.
Alan will be remembered for his warm and generous heart, his great sense of humor, and years of dedicated service to the community.
Alan is survived by his three sons: Brad, Matthew and Thomas Alexander (Joyce); his grandchildren: Courtney and Robert Alexander, his sister Lynne Alexander Rice (Chip) and his companion Susan McSparren Fellman. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Alexander.

I had the honor of working with Alan for the entire time he spent at St. Joseph Hospital/Regional Medical Center having been part of the team that hired him. He was an exceptional radiologist who was knowledgeable, hard working and kind to staff and patients alike. While we went are separate ways after retirement, I know he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. My most sincere condolences to the entire family for your loss.

Tommy , Matt and Brad,
We are so sorry to hear your dad passed away. We had so many memories at your home and with your family when you were growing up. Your dad was a great guy. Loved going through his flowers at the old home in East Pete. We especially enjoyed your grandfather ( your father dad) playing piano at our home. I hope you find comfort in your memories of your dad. Thinking of your family. Christine and Tim Droney
