Andrew Amway, 86

December 10, 2024

Andrew Amway, 86, of Lancaster, entered into rest Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, at the Mennonite Home/Trillium and Hospice. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Stanley and Anne Amway. He was the loving husband to the late Sylvia (Weaver) Amway. They had been married 62 years.

A 1956 McCaskey graduate and ’59 Millersville University grad, Andy spent 41 years as a teacher and coach at Hempfield High School, where he taught American history and chaired the history department. He also served as an advisor to the Hempfield Varsity Club.

After retiring, Andy was an adjunct professor, teaching history at Immaculata College.
When not teaching during the summer, Andy managed the summer playgrounds in Ephrata in the mid-1960s. He also coached youth baseball. He also was the manager at Lititz Springs Community Pool for more than 40 years. But Andy was better known for his fierce, competitive nature coaching scholastic sports. The success he achieved coaching in cross-country, boys’ and girls’ tennis and boys’ and girls’ swimming, is unparalleled. On January 8, 1996, he was featured in the magazine Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd” when, at age 57, he broke the national record for most combined victories by a high school coach. His teams combined for a 1,397-244-4 career record.

His players often said, “There’s the right way, the wrong way and the Amway,” and his way was successful. He often motivated athletes through tough love and expecting excellence. His boys’ tennis teams won nine league titles, five district championships, nine league singles champions and 10 doubles champs. He also coached two district singles champs and one state doubles champion.

Andy strategized and moved athletes into different events to get favorable matchups and it resulted in wins in the pool, where his boys’ swim teams won eight Central Penn and three District Three titles. He coached 67 individual district champions, 20 individual state champs and one Olympian, Kyle Salyards, who finished sixth in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

When he retired in 2000, Andy’s girls’ swim teams had won 117 straight league meets, not losing a meet in a decade. They won nine league titles, two district crowns and 37 girls won individual district titles. He also had two district champion teams in cross country. In total, he coached 130 All-State award winners.

For his success, Andy was elected to the Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. as well as Lancaster County Sports Hall of Fame and the Hempfield Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2006, Andy won the George W. Kirchner Award, the equivalent to the Heisman Trophy, for success in coaching in Lancaster County.

From 2000 to 2022, Andy served as the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s swimming chairperson.

He was involved in the Lancaster County Republican Party for many years and oversaw the polls in East Hempfield for 49 years, missing his 50th year due to his illness. He was also involved the PA Jaycees earlier in his career

In the mid-1990s, Andy started traveling to Green Bay, Wis. to see his beloved Packers football team. He owned stock in the franchise and had a brick with his name on it outside of Lambeau Field.
He often traveled to games with family and friends, introducing many to the area, getting “American Food” like a steak at Prime Quarter or a burger and ice cream at Culvers – and becoming an unofficial tour guide for trips across the country.
Ever the history teacher, Andy would pack something historical into a trip, as well as catching a college game in places like South Bend or Blacksburg on a Saturday to see Notre Dame or Virginia Tech – often getting tickets from former students or players – before watching a Packer game on Sunday in a nearby city. A few years ago, he boasted about visiting 26 of 32 stadiums in the NFL.

Always a leader, Andy played and was a commissioner for more than 40 years in an APBA Baseball league. He enjoyed following the Boston Celtics basketball team and attended several games, reaching out to a former student for playoff tickets one year.
His greatest enjoyment was being with his grandchildren. After retiring from Hempfield, Andy enjoyed travelling with Sylvia throughout the United States and Europe. Visiting Normandy Beach was a highlight.
Besides sports, he enjoyed talking about his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his son, Mark married to Debbie, of Lititz; daughter, Kim Groves married to Chad, of Valley Forge; grandchildren Ryan, Tyler and Ashley Amway, Nicole Lafferty, and Amy Saraceni.

Family and friends will be received from 6-8PM on Monday, December 16, 2024, at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Funeral Services will be held at 10AM on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory where family and friends will be received from 9-10AM prior to the service. Interment will be at 1:30PM in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens, Columbia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Caring Hospice Services, 101 Good Dr., Unit 1, Lancaster, PA 17603 or Tunnel to Towers.

Coach Amway was an amazing coach.  I had the opportunity to play for him on the Boys Tennis Team from 1990-93 and fortunate to win the District III championship in 1991.  Wonderful memories at Hempfield High School and playing on the tennis team.  RIP.

I swam for Mr. Amway my junior and senior years at Hempfield. He often told me the only mistake I made in life was not coming out as a freshman. He was a coach that you fearfully respected. He set the bar high and would push you to your limits. When it came to swim meet strategy, there was no one better than Mr. Amway. Who can forget his chicken scratch scouting reports with times of an opponent. He always said the swimmers in lane 1 and 6 win meets.  The pre-meet meetings in the basement of Golden Meadows were always memorable. Mr. Amway laying out the strategy for the meet. A lasting image of him I will always have is his hand clasped over his mouth peering over his glasses deep in thought. Later in life I would stop by the Lititz Springs pool to catch up. He always had stories to tell and life lessons to be taught. Recently I would see him on deck officiating high school swim meets. He always had time for a chat. The last time I saw him and we were saying our goodbyes, he told me to call him Andy. That was something I could never do. He was always Mr. Amway to me and countless others. Mr. Amway made a lasting impact on my life and many more through his teaching, coaching and friendship. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

I knew Andy for most of my life as a friend of the family, teacher, coach, mentor and compassionate friend. First, I knew him as a friend of my father (Jack Deaner), then he inspired me as my teacher and swimming coach. He was my boss at Hempfield where he guided me in my career ( I used to joke with him that his son was my first boss at Willow Street pool where I lifeguarded at age 15)! He stepped in when my father died and watched over me.  He gave special attention to my daughter through her swimming since my dad had died and finally he gave me encouragement in the roughest days of my battle with cancer when he called me each week. We shared our health journeys, old times at Hempfield, spoke of swimming and tennis. He really lifted my spirits during that time. He was finally able to see me attend my first retirement luncheon. I am so thankful for having Andy in my life and I was so glad I could recently spend time with him. I will miss him. Mark and Kim, you have my deepest sympathy. Elizabeth “Beth” Deaner Hershey

Coach Amway touched so many people in a positive way throughout his life.  I don’t know if he realized he was one of the people that helped me find my path as a young man. He instilled the value of working hard, teamwork and leadership.

My story with Andy Amway evolved from 1969 through his viewing this evening. My experience with Andy Amway began as a Hempfield student, continued through over twenty years of my thirty-five year teaching career, as my boss, in the Social Studies department at Hempfield. My feelings about Andy Amway during that span of time ranged from fear to respect to admiration. I saw him occasionally during his retirement years, but his presence was ever constant throughout my teaching career. With regard to teaching, much like the atheletes that he coached, he had a quality of leadership that made me strive for excellence. He made me a better teacher.

Mr. Amway was spectacular in the classroom. I spent my career teaching history in public schools and higher ed. I benefited considerably from his skilled pedagogy, and I always appreciated how well he prepared me for the next level.

My condolences to your family.  Mr.Amway, was my teacher, my coach and my boss. In the classroom, pool and in the life guard chair, He taught me a work ethic that I continue to follow every day. I moved to Lititz after college, and was happy to join the pool knowing Amway still there.  I enjoyed visiting with him, him telling stories.  And the fact that he still knew my butterfly time 15 years later was special.  But he was a special guy.  And he and my day could converse about politic until the cows came home. But always with respect.  That was one thing, you treat him with respect, he’ll treat you with respect.  I am glad to know Mr.Amway for most of my life. He will be missed.

I had the pleasure of meeting Andy several years ago through Mark.  Ginny met him working at the polls on Election Day.  I looked forward to seeing him each Election Day so we could catch up with what was happening in our lives.  I shall truly miss those conversations.  He was so proud of his children and grandchildren.  Rest in peace, Andy.

Mr. Amway…Coach Amway…a legend. He put his “all” in teaching and coaching.  And his “all” was about the kids.  I wanted to study hard for his class, and work hard in the pool.  His expectations of me as a student and a swimmer became mine.  I’ll never forget him talking with me, looking over his glasses, inspiring me to be the best that I could.  I feel honored to have had him as a teacher, a coach, and a friend.
Rest in peace, Mr. Amway.  And thank you.

Kim and Mark, The world has lost such a large presence to all those who had the privledge of knowing Mr. Amway. There is no doubt that he definitely helped keep me on the straight and narrow path as one of his swimmers. Although I never wanted to disappoint my mom and dad, I also never wanted to disappoint Mr. Amway! He directed me as an adult to call him, “Andy” not Mr. Amway. That was probably one of the only times I did not listen to what he told me. He will forever be , “Mr. Amway to me!”

My sincere condolences to Mark, Kim and your families.  While at HHS I did secretarial work in Mr. Amway’s office, and certainly the tasks were great learnings for a high school student; however, even GREATER life experiences were happening in parallel.  The responsibilities I was given to manage & the confidence he had in me on daily basis have been clearly remembered throughout my life – making a remarkable lasting impression.  He was a wonderful, unique human being and always my friend.  I am beyond grateful to have known Andy Amway.  Fondly, Linda (Haller) Fincher

I knew Andy for over 50 years in and out of Hempfield and we often relaxed or were involved with some acivities over the years. He was one of a kind and I believe it would be very difficult to duplicate him as a coach, teacher, and friend. RSP in Andy, there are no more Earthy competitions.

Coach Amway was the Best!  As my Cross Country Coach, his discipline and leadership in 11th grade was just what I needed.  Coach Amway believed in me as a runner and inspired me to always to give my best!  I fondly remember that 13 – 0 team in 1971, going to States and the attending a Penn State football game…. as he had promised earlier that July. I am so appreciative and thankful to have had him as my coach.
