Andrew Stephen Peyton Jr., 68
October 13, 2019
On Sunday, October 13th, Andrew Stephen Peyton Jr., loving husband and father of three, passed away at the age of 68. He was known to all that loved him as Steve.
Dr. Peyton graduated from the University of Maryland with a bachelor of science degree in zoology. He received his doctorate in optometry from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia in 1980.
After graduation from optometry school, he served as an optometric officer in the U.S. Army and as chief of optometry at both the 9th General Dispensary in Aschaffenburg, West Germany, and Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland.
Steve was deeply devoted to his family. He cherished his wife and children and served them selflessly through times of joy and adversity. He never missed a single sporting event, school pageant or recital. He was deeply spiritual and lived the gospel.
He was also an avid golfer and a staple of Conestoga Country Club. His golf buddies were like brothers to him and he cherished their annual trips to Myrtle Beach.
Beyond all else, Steve was very funny. His succinct wit remained until his final days. His humor and levity were gifts of light to all that loved him.
Steve is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kit Peyton, and his three children; Andrew Peyton, Mary Ann Patterson and Christopher Peyton. He is also survived by two grandsons; Edward Peyton and Luke Patterson and a daughter in law, Colleen Murray, and son in law Matt Patterson. In addition, he is survived by his mother Janet H. Peyton and siblings; Andrea Shuck, Linda Hudson, Don Peyton, Kate Carter, Elise Anawalt, Patrice Barranco and Michael Peyton.
He was preceded in death by his father Andy Peyton, his sister Maureen Peyton and best friend/brother-in-law Jim Shuck.
A viewing will be held on Friday October 18, 2019 at Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory from 6:00-8:00pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on October 19th at 11:00 am St. Leo the Great Catholic Church located at 2427 Marietta Ave. Lancaster, PA 17601 with Father Peter Hahn as celebrant. What I posted at Facebook tonight to 200 “friends”…
So, even in this most joyous time of Christmas and most stressful time of election is there pause to think of something else?
Indeed, there is.
Dr. Peyton was my eye doctor for about 30 years. He took good care of me and his legacy did fine today. This patient has now been with his practice way longer than the owner or any of the employees.
RIP Dr. Peyton and thank you for caring for me. Job well done.
When Mattie at the practice told me of his passing my eyes teared up which was not a good thing for the test. I will call and try to chat with Bethany who worked for him at least 20 years……..And to family of Steven, I only knew him as Doctor but he was very personable to me and someone I would like to meet outside of the office. I am so happy to see people are still posting to him and encourage me to do it too.

I’m so sorry but I just learned of Dr. Peyton’s passing when I was going on line to make an appontment. I was a long time patient but never had the chance to break bread with Dr. Peyton or get to know him outside the office. Please know that he was a super doc and seemed to be an even better person.
Peace,
Jim Mahoney and Family

I just found out that Steve had passed. I was just there in July and he was very hopeful about his prognosis. I’ve been a patient of his since he started with Dr. Stoltzfus on South Duke Street. Steve was a wonderful man and I am so very sorry for your family’s loss. It will be hard to replace him as a professional and I sure it’s the same for your family personally. Again, I can’t tell you how sorry I am. God Bless your family.

My name is Leonard T. Connors, I recently learned of Andrews passing. Steve and I (I called him Steve back then) went to Admiral Farragut Academy together, played football together and graduated together. He called me brother Connors and I called him brother Peyton. Judging from Steve’s obituary I suspect now our greetings to each other were a little more then the mutual respect we had for each other at the time. No need to tell Steve’s family that even back then Steve was a true gentleman and class guy. I am very saddned to learn of Steve’s passing and regret now never keeping in touch with him.

We were former patients of Dr. Peyton and wish to send our condolences to his family. I’m sure his dedication to his profession caused him to stay late at the office far too often, but please know that he was sincerely appreciated more than you know. Because of his expertise, he was able to quickly recognize a serious problem and direct my husband to get the care he needed to save the vision in his eye. On my routine visits, I would occasionally remind him of this and thank him, but his response was always one of humility and grace and he would turn the conversation away to others. He handled every visit with professionalism and care. Somehow he remembered conversations from our previous annual exams and would ask a follow up question about our golf game, challenges at work, or travels. Although we were “only patients”, and have long since moved away, we were truly saddened by this news and will miss him until we meet again. May the love of God and your faith in Him bring you peace.

Dear Kit, Andrew, Mary Ann and Chris
Steve will be greatly missed as an excellent eye doctor but more so as a wonderful husband, father and friend. I’ve been thinking about the elementary basketball games where Andrew and Chris opposed each other on the court but later went on to be best of friends. You are in our thoughts and prayers and you know where I am should you need anything at all. Please don’t hesitate to call. Love and Prayers.

Dear Kit and Family,
I am greatly saddened by your loss. I have known you both from St. Leo’s and Steve was my eye doctor for many years. He was always professional, kind, caring and consciencious about treating his patients. I couldn’t have asked for a better eye doctor. I will miss him.
Please know that you and your family and the “office family” will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. God bless you all.

I’m so sorry to hear that Steve has passed, he was one of the missing people we were trying to locate for our 50th high school reunion which is next weekend. I’ve had the office number for about 2 weeks and failed to call until tonight and spoke with one of the girls at the office and got the news. He will be missed, I have so many memories of Steve from our high school years and of course Jim his brother in law, who was always good for buying beer for us. My heart goes out to his mom Janet, his wife Kit and their children and his brother and sisters.

I have been a patient of Dr. Peyton’s for many years. Additionally, one summer, he was kind enough to also see my mom when she was in visiting me from W PA. I cannot say enough nice things about Dr. Peyton. He was always a consumate professional. He was patient, attentive, precise with details, jovial, conversational, caring and so very knowledgeable. I was shocked to read of his passing and wanted to take a moment to include a condolence. My thoughts are with Dr. Peyton’s family and his “work” family as you all navigate your way through this loss. May the fact that others are sharing with you that Dr. Peyton made a difference in many lives and will be greatly missed provide you some comfort today and in the coming days.
In Sympathy,
