Arthur R. Hulme, 97

July 24, 2021

Arthur R. Hulme, 97, of Lancaster, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021.

Art is the husband of Arline A. Griffin Hulme with whom he shared 71 years of marriage. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late William J. and Marie Clara Lynch Hulme.

Arthur earned an undergraduate degree in Health and Physical Education from West Chester University where he excelled as an athlete on the football and track teams. His studies were interrupted by WW II serving our country as a 2nd and then 1st Lt. in the Pacific Theater. He received several accolades from his company commander. Upon his return, he completed his undergraduate work at West Chester and earned a Master’s degree from Temple University. Art also continued his military career in the Army Reserves and Army National Guard for 30 years, retiring in 1984 as a Major.

Arthur was a health and physical education professor at Millersville University from 1953 until his retirement in 1984. Initially, he coached football and track and field but in 1958 Art gave up football to start Millersville’s first cross country program. He was the Head Coach of Track and Field and Cross Country until 1968 when he became Chairman of the Health and Physical Education Department. Upon his retirement in 1984, Art and Arline traveled the world extensively and enjoyed winters in St. Petersburg Beach, FL.

In addition to his wife, Arline, Arthur is survived by his sons: Robert G. Hulme of Cherry Hill, NJ and William J. married to Amy E. Hulme of Wyomissing, PA; his daughter-in-law Susan J. Hulme of Mt. Laurel, NJ, his niece and nephew Janet Fishman and James Hulme, his 5 grandchildren Emily, Andrew, Michael, Lindsay and Meghan, and by his 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, William J. Hulme and William’s wife, Janet (Loeb) Hulme.

There will be a private service at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors, 1117 Country Club Rd., Camp Hill, PA 17011

Condolences to the Family

It was with great sadness that I recently read a letter received from a classmate informing me of Coach’s passing. As a member of the PSAC Track and Field Championship team, I can attest it was more important to us to deliver that victory for him than for ourselves. He taught us in the classroom but he taught us even more on the track. Thru his manner and demeanor and actions he taught us how to accept victory and how to endure defeat and how to treat teammates and opponents equally with respect. In short, he taught us how to be men. I regret never telling him how profoundly he affected our lives beyond sports. Always the consummate gentleman, Rest In Peace, Coach.

Prayers and sympathies to Arline and her family on the loss of their husband and father. I had the privilege of serving as his assistant track coach my first two years on the Staff at Millersville. I know one of his greatest thrills was winning the PSAC Track Championship in his final year of coaching. He was a great person. RIP.

Arline, I was saddened to hear about Art. My thoughts and sympathies are with you and your family. I had the pleasure of working with both of you at the dental office you used on Oregon Pike, as your dental hygienist. I always enjoyed our visits while at the same time taking care of the dental business. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been at the office(retirement is nice) and I still have fond memories of you and Art and the time we spent together. Wishing you peace and comfort.

Pucillo Gymnasium is where I first met Mr. Hulme.  He shared a very cramped office with my father, Dick DeHart.  (I believe George Katchmer was packed in there too.) The Hulme family used our travel trailer from time to time for vacations.  It was a lovely, close time at Millersville State Teacher’s College.  Always a gentleman,  Mr. Hulme had a positive influence on many.  Thank you.

Prayers and thoughts are with the family. He was a great educator and boss  at MU.
I have many fond memories of those wonderful years, when the department was a family.

I was very fortunate to have a professor of Art Hulme’s personality nearly sixty years ago at MSTC.  Approximately a decade later I had the privlege of having his two sons as athletes on my swimming and tennis teams at Hempfield High School.  I have always felt you judge parents by the children they raised.  If there is any validity to this, Art and his wife, Arline, deserve a great deal of credit.   Our contemporary society would be better off if we had more Art & Arline Hulme’s.  I consider it a privilege having known Art.  You will be missed.

Amy,
I’m not certain you remember me, but we officiated a Cedar Crest swimming meet years ago, and your dad was present, and I enjoyede reconnecting with him following the meet. I was deeply saddened to read of his passing in today’s paper. I first met Art as a student at Millersville in the 1960’s. I was astonished he actually remembered me at the meet at Cedar Crest so many years later, but that was his unique style, always the gentleman, kind and considerate. He was indeed one of the truly nice guys. I’m glad he had such a long life as the world needs more like him. Please accept my sympathy on your loss; my life is diminished knowing he is no longer with us.

I had the great good fortune to have Mr. Hulme as a phys ed teacher in college.  Whenever I think of Mr. Hulme I think first of the word gentlemen, for he was one of the nicest, kindest, considerate, and pleasant men I ever met.   Never pretentious, always friendly!   One of this world’s truly nice people.

A fine individual.  We got to know the Hulmes when Bill was a student and fellow staff member at Millersville.  In fact Nancy and Bill baby sat the the children one time.  Great family.  Art made a very positive impression on all the students he taught and coached at MU.  Bill remembers his swimming classes at MU when He thinks Art passed him rather than letting Bill drown.  It was an honor to know the Hulmes.

Art was one of the nicest, kindest, gentlest men I have ever known. We were so blessed to have Art and Arline as our neighbors and friends for over 20 years. We are mourning you in North Carolina, Art. Prayers for you and your family.
