Barbara H. Shoemaker, 78

September 04, 2019

Barbara H. Shoemaker, 78, of Lancaster, passed away on September 4, 2019 at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy. Born in Kingston, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Leona (Stravinsky) Heck. Barbara was the beloved wife of J. Richard Shoemaker, and together they shared 59 years of marriage. In addition to her husband, Barbara is survived by her son, Anthony Shoemaker, his wife Gayle and their son Graham, of Bartlett, IL.

After attending high school in Chester, PA, Barbara met Richard while attending Millersville State Teachers college. She was more than a wife, being a great partner in Richard’s pursuit of his career in commercial arts. Later, she became a central part of the management of Maclay & Shoemaker Graphics through her bookkeeping and financial talents. In the 80’s she discovered aerobics, and within a few years she became a partner with Figurifics, later purchasing the aerobics instruction business.

Barb loved her family greatly, and reveled in spending time with them. She was caring, kind, smart, creative, funny, green-thumbed, and loved dearly. Her greatest joy was playing with her grandson Graham.

Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services which will be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, 441 North George Street, Millersville, PA, 17551, where the family will receive guests starting at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory can be offered to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, P O Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Condolences to the Family

September 10, 2019

I just got an email from Amy….who wanted me to give you her condolences when I saw you.   She is on vacation on St. John . She said she would have been there had she been home.
I’m sorry we didn’t make the buriel  service.  CIndy very much wanted to come to the funeral service, but since this is her only day off , felt she needed to get home.
It was a wonderful service and eulogy .  Tony is so well spoken, and his remarks were so loving of his mum.  I esp. enjoyed his comments about BArb and Christmas which quickly reminded me of our daily emails, and how she’d keep me abreast of decorating of the tree.  She was so particular..esp. because it could be seen from the street…and the lights had to be perfect or she wasn’t happy.  I told her ”never come to look at my tree…it is soooooooo not perfect”.And it wasn’t.  “It’ll be fine” has been my motto for  years.   Molly

Dear Rich and Tony…..I am going to miss her.  We didn’t see a lot of each other but we emailed back and forth every day…. We agreed on so many things, we shared our families.  She shared pictures of Graham so I could see how much he’d grown.  We exchanged recipies.  They were simple things, but it’s what makes a family.  I will never watch Jeopardy or eat chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting again without always thinking of her

Dick, I am so sorry to hear of Barb’s passing. I will always remember her as so kind and friendly.  I always admired her sense of style, and her business skills. She had a great sense of humor. She will be missed.
