Carleton G. Miller, 97, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully Wednesday August 1, 2012 in the Glen at Willow Valley Retirement Community, where he resided for the past 20 years.
Born in Chicago and living the majority of his life in the Philadelphia area, he was the son of the late Carleton H. and Violet (Gusterine) Mueller, and the husband of the late Mary (Johnston) Miller, to whom he was married 71 years. She passed away in February, 2011.
Carleton was employed for 43 years as a manufacturer’s representative for the Warren Featherbone Company, retiring in 1983. He was a minor league ballplayer, playing shortstop for the Chicago Cubs’ farm team in the Triple I League, and a chess master who especially loved to play chess by mail. Carleton attended the Chicago Art Institute, utilizing his talents at the Warren Featherbone Co. He spent much of his free time volunteering for different organizations but also devoted time to being a baseball coach. Though he himself had poor eyesight, he spent many hours assisting blind golfers with their game on the golf course.
Of the Quaker faith, he was a member of the Society of Friends, at Gwynedd Meeting in Montgomery County, PA.
He is survived by a son, James C. Miller and his wife Susan of Sumneytown, PA; two daughters: Carolyn Bell of Thousand Oaks, CA and Louise A. Miller of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
