Charles Edward Pohl, MD, 94

October 22, 2024

Charles Edward (Ed) Pohl, MD, 94, of Lancaster, PA, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2024, at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Eva Maria Preiss Pohl and Charles Matthew Pohl, MD. Ed was a man of deep faith, intellect, generosity, and boundless curiosity. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Nora Ann Pohl, and his son, Daniel Joseph Pohl.

Ed graduated from Manheim High School and earned his degree from Franklin & Marshall College in 1952. He followed his passion for medicine to Hahnemann Medical School, where he graduated in 1956. After medical school, Ed served as Lieutenant Commander at the Chelsea Naval Base near his home in Marblehead, MA, until 1965. Upon completing his service, Ed and Nora settled in Lancaster, PA, where he founded Urologic Associates and practiced urology for 36 successful years, becoming widely respected for his expertise and dedication to his patients.

Beyond his medical career, Ed had a rich life filled with pursuits that reflected his love of learning. He had a deep passion for history and antiques, often spending time researching various pieces of sterling silver with his wife, Nora. His curiosity about the past extended to his own family history, and he devoted countless hours to genealogical research, meticulously mapping out the Pohl family lineage on Ancestry.com.

Ed and Nora loved to travel, especially to Europe and Asia, where they soaked up the culture and history of each place they visited. He was a devoted father and grandfather, finding joy in spending time with his grandchildren and sharing with them his love of history, music, storytelling, and antiques. He is remembered for his sense of humor, kindness, and the extensive wisdom that he shared with all who knew him.

He is survived by his four children: Charles Edward Pohl II (Joan) of Coto de Caza, CA; Edward Franklin Pohl (Joanne) of Lancaster, PA; Michael James Pohl (Kerry) of Arlington, VA; and Marie Michelle “Mimi” Mackey (James) of Bellevue, WA. He also leaves behind fourteen grandchildren: Charles, Michael, James, and Caroline; Margaret, Hugh, and Eddie; Katherine, Claire, and Emily; Alexandra and James; and Sarah and Brigid.

Services will be held on October 26th at 11AM at St Leo The Great Catholic Church, 2427 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17601. The family will receive guests for a viewing from 10AM to 11AM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery, Bausman.

I had the opportunity to get to know Dr. Pohl  as I cared for him at St. Annes the last few months of his life.  He was always so kind to all of the staff, even when he was not feeling well.  I will always remember his gentle spirit.  I will keep his friends and family in my prayers during this difficult time.  May he RIP.Jany G

Ed has lived a long life and we are glad to have been part of it. What fond memories of all the social occasions together with Ed. Due to plans with our family we were unable to attend Ed’s funeral. You all will miss him. His obituary is so very nice. Well done. We send our our sympathy,  Barbara and Ed Maley

Dear Pohl family,
As a long-time employee of Ancestry, I am moved when I see that people loved our site so much that Ancestry is mentioned in an obituary. I checked out Ed’s tree (he made it public to share online) and he put together such a great tree including lots of great photographs. It is clear he was meticulous in his findings. So sorry for your loss. Jennifer Utley

To the Family of Ed Pohl,
Many years ago my husband and I were good friends of your parents, Nora and Ed.  Such good times we had at their lovely dinner parties.  I was always so pleased with how they included their children in the serving at those occasions, as they wanted you all to know and understand the finer points of dining as you grew older.  We lived not far away in School Lane Hills, and your Dad and my former husband were medical friends and associates, wanting only the best in care for their patients.  Just know I am thinking of you all, knowing how very much your parents meant.  While this is a sad time, it is also a time to feel grateful for the many years they were your guiding light.
Sending fondest greetings.  Will keep you close in thoughts and prayers.
Deborah (formerly Shertzer) Benson Everett, North Andover, MA

My deepest condolences to the family. I was always happy when I ran into him in the surgeon’s lounge at LGH. You could always count on a friendly smile and likely a good story!
It was even better to find yourself seated next to Ed and Nora at a dinner party. The food became secondary to the conversation. We will never forget Ed’s “Meltdown” party at the Hamilton Club. The dessert featured a half of pear covered with a cranberry sauce. It turned out the pears were still frozen so the first attempt to cut a bite sent the pear flying across the plate onto your lap. Many skilled surgeons left that night hoping their tie would cover the red spot on their white shirt!
I will also forever remember him on Pearl Harbor Day after he told me he was there in 1941, where his Dad was stationed. He and his Mother witnessed the Japenese bombers flying overhead on their way to drop to their bombs!
God Bless Him and the Family.
Dr. Gerald and Carla Rothacker

To the Pohl Family ~ Dr. Pohl cared for my late husband in the 70’s & 80’s. Dr. Pohl’s compassion was appreciated. I recall walking up to the hospital, to visit my husbandd, with Dr. Pohl after I had parked my car across from his office on Duke Street. He was kind and empathic as Ron and I navigated a serious health issue. I often reflect upon his kind gesture of speaking with me that day. May God provide you with peace, strength and comfort during these days.

I am saddened to learn of the loss of Dr. Pohl. I benefitted from his skill about 40 years ago and was appreciative of his care and expertise. May you be blessed with memories of when he shared life with you and may you receive his legacy with gratitude. Eccl. 7: 1-3
