David Allan Shaffer, 74

July 19, 2024

David Allan Shaffer, 74, peacefully passed away on Friday, July 19, 2024 after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. A devoted Christian, Dave now rests in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Born in DuBois, Pennsylvania, Dave was the son of the late Blair V. and Barbara E. (Smith) Shaffer. Dave lived most of his life in Lititz, Pennsylvania, where he raised his children, his greatest joy, with his former wife, Marlene (Griffith) Shaffer, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage. He later married Pamela J. (Carroll) Shaffer in 2010, who survives him. Since 2010, Dave and Pam lived in Northampton, PA, but his heart always remained in Lititz with his children and grandchildren, his greatest legacy, pride and joy.

Prior to retiring from Carpenter Technologies, Dave’s career was working as a Project manager in the IT department. He also took time to give back to his community. As a 38 year volunteer and lifetime member with the Rothsville, PA Volunteer Fire Company, he served as a firefighter, ambulance responder and safety officer. Dave’s great sense of humor and kind, gentle nature endeared him to everyone he met. He was a man of many passions. Dave was also a dedicated Jeep enthusiast. Each of his six Jeeps was lovingly named and personalized. He also enjoyed spending time hiking or beachside, making numerous road trips to Florida or the Delaware beaches. His other hobbies included geocaching, lighthouse touring, playing pinochle, kayaking, and fishing, especially if these activities included his family or cherished grandchildren. Animals were drawn to him. For many years he enjoyed trail rides with his horse, Chicky, hikes with Buddy, his dog, or relaxing with the family’s 3 cats. Dave was also an avid writer, who authored and published two books: Rosie’s Demise and Lynsey’s Quest, both known as the Detective Copper Top Mysteries. Essential to his life was his deep Christian faith. He was a proud graduate of Evangelical Seminary in Myerstown.

Dave is survived by his wife, Pamela Shaffer; his children, Mary (Craig) Hasson and Dave (Nicole) Shaffer; his step-children, Beth Kish and Jeff (Cynthia Meyers) Guldin; his sisters, Bea Koch, Beth Miller, and Kathy Shaffer; and grandchildren, Brittany Hasson, Ben (Kayla) Hasson, Blair Shaffer, Brandon Shaffer, Brady Shaffer, Sophia Kish, Arthur Guldin, and Oliver Guldin.

Friends and family will be received from 10:30AM to 11:30AM on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow beginning at 11:30AM. Burial will take place in Millport Mennonite Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dave’s name to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation at: https://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org or to the Rothsville Fire Company at: rvfc.com.

It came as a bit of a shock to me when I read about Dave’s passing, although it has been over 55 years since we last shared any time, I can vividly recall the good times we had together. We went on many forays rock and mineral collecting and went deer hunting together both locally and one time near Johnstown, Cambria County where we stayed at my Grandparents home. I am so happy to read that Dave had such an active and fulfilling life and close family. Rest in peace, my friend. I will see you again when I cross over “the bridge”.
