David Maerz
September 27, 2013
David Maerz slipped the bonds of Earth peacefully and entered into the loving presence of his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 27, 2013.
Born in Lancaster, PA, he was the son of Martin and Virginia Maerz, with whom he resided. He is also survived by his older brother, Steven, of Lancaster, and his younger brother, Peter of Everett, WA. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Michael and Christine Maerz, and maternal grandparents, Charles A. and Robinette Faris. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
David was a 1992 graduate of Lancaster Christian School. While in his teen years, he enjoyed racing radio-controlled cars, winning a trophy and several ribbons. During those years, he also enjoyed flying trips in his dad’s plane and hanging out with “airport bums” at Smoketown. The past 15 years, Dave’s been traveling the country with his parents in the RV and escaping cold winters in sunny Florida.
From a young age, David was always interested in construction and mechanics and how things were made. He never tired of watching work projects and was very attuned to how things should be done. He was a very thoughtful person who was genuinely concerned about others. People who knew him were impressed by his sharp mind and wit. He followed politics and news, the History Channel, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune, and was a Penn State Football fan. He loved having his German Shepherd dog with him. Although wheelchair bound and using a ventilator, he was able to ride a pontoon boat in the Chesapeake Bay area.
David had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a progressive muscle wasting disease throughout his life. He dealt with it with grace, never complaining about limitations or challenges. His life was a gift from God and a blessing and inspiration to all who knew him. For many years, David attended Lancaster Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. The family sincerely thanks the church family for the love, prayer support, and visits through the years.
A viewing will be held Friday, October 4, 2013 from 10-11AM at Lancaster Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Rd., Lancaster, PA. The Funeral Service will follow at the church at 11AM. Interment will be at Conestoga Memorial Park. If desired, the family kindly requests that memorials in David’s memory be sent to The Muscular Dystrophy Assn, 3300 East Sunrise Drive, Tucson, AZ 85718-3229.

Dear Marty and Ginny, Please accept my deepest sympathy in the passing of David. While we were neighbors for 25 years we watched David as he grew from an inquisitive boy to a young man who dealt with his daily challenges with courage. Bob and I always commenting on the care and love you gave to him. It was obvious David was God’s gift to you and you cherished and nurtured him. I know he will be missed but I hope god will give you strength to cope during this time and the days to come.

Dear Martin & Virginia,
It is with sadness that Barb and I send our sympathies to you at this time of loss in your family. We never met David, but knowing that 5-1/2 years ago when we bought the apartment building from you, both you and Virginia were fully involved in David’s care. You cared for him in a most admirable and noble way the best you could until the end. We pray that in this time of sorrow you will feel the comfort of God, family and friends in amazing ways and draw on His strength to go on. A donation will be sent to MDA in David’s memory.

My deepest sympathy to you at this time, while rejoicing at his freedom with the Lord. It was obvious when talking together at our class reunion that David enriched your lives just as much as you did your best to enrich his. You will never regret your loving care for him. God be with you in the coming days as you reorganize your lives.

I was a 1995 graduate of LCS (and I’m not sure how I stumbled upon David’s obituary yesterday) but I want to offer my sympathy. I, as an “underclassman”, remember seeing David motor all over the school in his wheelchair. And the emotional standing ovation David received at “senior chapel” before graduation. This obituary is beautifully written and a lovely tribute to the value of God’s gift of life, wheelchair-bound or not. Thank you, as his parents and family for your dedication to him and serving the Lord by serving David. It must be a bittersweet time for you now, missing David, but rejoicing in his full bodily healing in heaven! “Slipping the bonds of earth”…..well-said.
Blessings,

Dear Maerz Family:
My condolences on the loss of your son David. What a lovely obituary about David and him living a full and spiritual life. He will certainly be missed. I just lost my son, Larry Sills, who also had Duchenne MD. He passed away three weeks ago on September 6 at the age of 31.
Perhaps we we could meet sometime to share all of the wonderful memories of these young men. My email is sj@thesills.com.
Sincerely,
Sandy Sills
