Devon Marie Wiener, 32
May 29, 1991 - May 01, 2024
On Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the age of 32, Devon’s fight with cancer ended.
Devon was born May 29, 1991, in Corning, NY, one minute before her twin sister. Devon’s charm, generosity, and caring personality emerged early in her childhood, and remained a core part of who she was her entire life.
From a very young age, Devon had a passion for animals, crafts and family. Her face would light up at the sight of any baby animal or reptile, and even thru her adulthood it was a challenge to keep her from bringing home every one she’d see!
Devon was an avid horseback rider for about 15 years, starting at age 9. She loved being around horses and rode English, Western, and Pleasure. She attended summer riding camps and eventually became a riding instructor/counselor with Girl Scouts, for those riding camps.
Devon loved crafts since she was a child, dabbling in many varieties and forms until she discovered her passion for crochet — most of which she made as gifts for others.
Devon graduated from Corning-Painted Post West High School, in 2009, working at a local pet store throughout high school. She met the love of her life, David Wiener, in 2010, while attending Binghamton University.
After completing her B.S. degree in Psychology/Education in 2013, she followed David to the Lancaster, PA area, where they married in 2015 and settled down to begin their life together.
In Lancaster, Devon was a pre-school teacher with Bright Horizons / U-Gro at the Masonic Village facility for 7 years, until she became a Teacher’s Aide at Doe Run Elementary School in 2021. “Miss Devon,” as she was known in school, absolutely loved her jobs teaching young children and helping them flourish. She was so happy she had found her “niche”.
In 2018, her lifelong dream of being a Mom came true when Devon and David welcomed their daughter, Jenna Rae, into their lives. Devon loved being a mother — she was an amazing one — and she had always hoped to have more children.
In March 2022, Devon received her cancer diagnosis — and vowed that she was “not going down without a fight”. And she fought … hard. She fought for every day she could be here to be “Mommy” to Jenna.
Devon will be sorely missed and is survived by her loving husband, David, and daughter, Jenna [Lancaster, PA]; mother and stepfather, Molly (McGarrell) and Mike Brown [Corning, NY]; father and stepmother, David Rumbarger and Lorraine Storch [Corning, NY]; twin sister Casey (Rumbarger) and Bryant Woolcock [Creedmoor, NC]; stepsisters, Susan [Elmira, NY] and Allison Brown [Syracuse, NY]; an amazing family of in-laws from Plainview, NY, who treated her as if she’d been a part of their family all along: Lorrie Majansky; Barry and Geri Wiener; Lenny, Brianne, Henry and Jonah Wiener; Cynthia Wiener, and so many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral will be held Thursday, May 2 at Charles F Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory – Lititz Pike Chapel, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA, with Rabbi Jack Paskoff of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim officiating. Burial will be Friday, May 2 at 10:30am at New Montefiore Cemetery, West Babylon, NY. Sherman’s Memorial will be handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society (with earmark for lung cancer research) Donate Today | The American Cancer Society , American Lung Association Donate – American Lung Association , or Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute thru Make a Gift – Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to: all of the staff and volunteers at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute and at Bob Fryer & Family Inpatient Center for their compassionate care in Devon’s fight; Annie Maxwell for caring for Devon when family couldn’t; the amazing staff at UGro Lancaster/Brownstown for all the ways they’ve supported Jenna and the family; Rabbi Jack Paskoff and the community from Congregation Shaarai Shomayim; and all the friends, acquaintances, and strangers who have been part of “Team Devon”.
