Donald D. Brennan, 88

January 09, 2025

Donald Duncan Brennan, of Lancaster, PA died peacefully at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Born on December 21, 1936 in Welland, Ontario. He was the son of the late Lloyd and Helen Brennan. He was the loving husband of Jacqueline “Jackie” (Magnan) Brennan whom he married in 1963.

Don received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (1961) and a Master of Business (1970) from McGill University. As an undergraduate, he served as President of the Mechanical Engineering School, President of his class, President of the McGill University Scarlet Key Honor Society and President of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity. Later, Don served on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, the Lancaster Science Factory, and the Lancaster Country Club where he has been a member for almost fifty years. He was a member of The Moles and The Beavers, prestigious honorary national organizations for the heavy construction industry.

Don loved engineering. His professional life touched many people and aspects of society. As a Mechanical Engineer, he worked on countless civil and mechanical jobs tirelessly and enthusiastically, leading and mentoring professionals until his death. He began his career in 1960 at the Atlas Construction Company in Montreal, steadily rising to Assistant Chief Engineer building some of Canada’s largest bridges, deep-sea marine wharfs and two sunken tube tunnels in Montreal and Mobile, Alabama.

In 1972, Don moved with his family to Pennsylvania and joined Elgood Mayo Corporation as Vice President and Chief Engineer, designing and supplying underground construction equipment for subways and deep-water tunnels throughout the U.S. In 1979, Don purchased the company and ran the business for the next 15 years engaged in over four thousand projects throughout the U.S. and Canada.

In 1994, Don sold Elgood Mayo to Gannett Fleming of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania and continued working as a consultant in the underground industry for many construction companies until he joined the Underground Division of Kiewit Infrastructure Company in 2011 as a Senior Design Engineer.

Don enjoyed playing golf, skiing, fishing, dancing, reading, playing gin with his buddies, and traveling. He loved life, adventures and had a great sense of humor.

Don is survived by his wife, Jackie, of over 61 years; his two sons, Douglas (Anabela) of Dalkey, Ireland and Derek (Beverly) of Atlanta; his daughter Michele Murphy (William) of Annapolis; and ten beautiful grandchildren: Jane, John, Simon, Matthew, Peter, Benjamin, Sam, Hailee, Hunter, and Kayla whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marguerite Maudsley and Katherine Rockel.

The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Brennan, Dr. Kathyrn Deprimo, Amy Shinkus, PA-C, and the extraordinary nurses on the eight floor of the Lancaster General Hospital who compassionately cared for him.

Friends and family are invited to Don’s Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday January 25, 2025, at St. John Neumann Catholic Church 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, PA 17601 at 11:00 am with The Rev. Dan Powell as Celebrant. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30am until the time of the service. A private interment will be held at St. Joseph’s New Roman Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Don’s memory to the Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, 615 Fairview Avenue Lancaster, PA 17603 and the Lancaster Science Factory, 454 New Holland Avenue Lancaster, PA 17602.

I have had the privilege of working with Don on numerous projects in my time working for Kiewit.  Don’s knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for the work we do was truly infectious and will truly be missed.  What will truly be missed the most however, was just how great of a person he was.
My fondness memory of Don was when he came out to the Fermi project in South Dakota.  On the visit he was helping us with some temporary engineering we were doing but he had one request of me and that was to get him a tour of the hoist rooms.  When we went into the hoist room he was like a kid in a candy story and he shared with me how he had studying these hoists in text books when he was in school.  After the visit I had a recruiting dinner at SDSM&T that evening and he was flying out the next day so I invited him to come along and I will never forget how he was sharing his passion for engineering with all of the new hire recruits.
May god bless Don and his Family.

To Ms Jackie and Family, I cannot but remember Mr Brennan’s tranquil, graditude and politeness that He exuded to others….Pulling Doug out of the LCC waters in congratulations and to me and Derek barely finishing our legs in the water while Michelle stood by cheering us all ….which was decades …a long time ago…. It is with these memories that we remember Life and What others instill unto you and others…May Mr Brennan RIP:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;where there is sadness, joy.O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seekto be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive,it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I have known Don since 2005 working closely with him at Kiewit ever since then.  Don was an amazing mentor of mine.  Don took me under his wing and truly helped show me what it was to be an engineer.  He pushed me to be better every day in everything I did.  He encouraged me to know there is always a solution out there if we put the teams mind to finding it.  These lessons I will carry with me throughout my career.  But the true treasures of knowing Don was his friendship.  He got to know my wife and I very well outside of work, as we had countless dinners together.  He always put her first and made her feel welcome in odd situations.  He joked she was his “girlfriend”.  Together we cherish all of these memories dearly and will greatly miss him.  We pray for Jackie and the whole family.  We have been blessed to have gotten to know many of them, all whom clearly Don played a key role in developing into amazing people.

Don was thee best engineer I had ever worked with, always quick to listen to your problem/solution and interact with you in order to get a workwise solution before even starting the design.  Along with being engineeringly savy, on our calls he would always start with how me and my family were getting along, he was always a high point of my day when I interacted with him. He made time for everyone and was a sharp as they coming in building or designing something, Don you will be greatly missed in the Underground/Engineering Community and by me.

Don. You son of a gun. You helped get the Science Factory up and running. You were one of the founding sponsors, an exhibit advisor, and most importantly… offered encouragement when the Sciencxe Factory was just an idea. You were the guy who said “We can do this.” and we did!!!!  Thanks Don. All the kids thank you. Jim Bunting

Jackie and family – my sincerest condolences.  i first met Don as my roommate on a golf outing in NJ and he was a true friend.  We played gin together as a team while he was displaying his humor whether or not we did well.  Working allong side Don on a few projects at the Country Club gave me the appreciation of knowing and seeing his talents as an engineer and businessman.  I will keep your family in my prayers and hope that you find solace for your grief.  Bill Murry

So very sorry to learn of this news.  I wish the family peace and strength in this awful time.  Don always left me happy in his presence. What a wonderful, joyful life he lived, and what a wonderful impression he left on all who spent time with him.  As a Canadian, McGill Engineering grad, and Scarlet Key member, I felt additional kinship with him, and enjoyed swapping stories.  He is already missed.

I had the ultimate privilege of meeting Don in 2011 when he joined Kiewit and I welcomed him him to the Kiewit family as a young engineer – even though he already had 35 years of experience beyond me. He was a great Engineer’s engineer and contributed to our Underground industry in such a significant way. But more importantly- he was a kind, thoughtful and cheerful person to work with. Working with this son Derek for almost 17 years, I am fortunate to have worked with 2 Brennans in the tunneling industry. Rest in Peace Don.

He was always a kind, easy-going and fun person to work with and I will miss him very-very much. My deepest sympathies go out to his family.
