Donald W. Witmer, 72
January 12, 2025
Donald Walter Witmer, 72, of Washington Boro, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2025, at home alongside his loving family. He was the devoted and loving husband of Joan (Hostetter) Witmer for 53 years.
Born in Washington Boro, Donald was the son of the late Walter Witmer and Helen (Kauffman) Biechler.
Donald was a passionate, highly successful, lifelong Manor Township farmer. He transformed a small loan from his grandfather into a 1200-acre business. Donald bought his first farm at the age of 18. He was a pioneer in perfecting the double-cropping of soybeans by building his own planter and was one of the first farmers in Manor Township to preserve farmland. He started farming very early in life where he performed custom work on farms. He oversaw a multi-generational and disciplinary farm that grew corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, and tobacco, and raised hogs, steer, and chickens. Specifically, he raised chickens for Longenecker Hatchery for over 45 years and he appreciated their partnership together. He started the Letort Valley Farms Partnership in 2000 with his son Kevin and family and was most proud of his strong influence on many young adults.
Donald was an Alumni of the Manor Future Farmers of America (FFA) and a member of the Stehman’s United Methodist Church where he served as the Greenfield Cemetery Treasurer, and a church trustee. He also served on the Manor Township Planning Board for several years. Donald enjoyed spending time with family and friends, antiquing, attending farm shows, supporting the FFA through the purchasing of Fair Animals, and simply enjoyed talking about agriculture and driving one of his tractors on the farm.
In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his four children: Kevin D., husband of Jennifer (Tomlinson), of Millersville, Kathy W., wife of CAPT Michael Roschel, of Huntingtown, MD, Amanda S., wife of Thomas Taglieri III, of Conestoga, Wendy J Witmer, companion of Jun Kim, of Washington Boro. Also surviving are his 12 grandchildren and his brother, Glenn Witmer of Millersville.
Donald was predeceased by his father, Walter, husband of Arlene, his mother Helen, wife of John Biechler, and his son-in-law, Lee Failla.
Relatives and friends are invited to join Donald’s family for a visitation from 6PM to 8PM, Friday, January 17, 2025, at Stehman United Methodist Church, 485 Indian Run Road, Millersville, PA 17551. Funeral Services will be held at the church on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 11AM. A visitation will be held at the church, from 9AM until 11AM. Interment will follow the service at Greenfield Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Lancaster Farmland Trust or Hospice & Community Care.

Joan, my dear HS classmate and Family. I only heard about Donnie’s passing at our high school friends group breakfast yesterday at the Mart. Although I was aware of Donnie’s great farming achievements and his devastating illness, time and different careers keep us old Penn Manor HS friends and Motorheads apart. I pursued our love for big motor 60-70s era cars, (remembering your Olds Cutlass 442) a bit longer, entered the military and finished my career out at Armstrong World Industries. A big change/difference than the small farm I grew up on, but still enjoyed being taught the values of farming life. God Bless and hope to see you again on the other side,,, Clyde

My sincere sympathy Wendy to you and your family. I knew your Dad was hard working but I never realized how involved and how successful he was. It sounds like in his lifetime he made a real difference, that’s something to be proud of. I pray beautiful good memories replace your tears and ease your sorrow. I know now where you got your busy, hardworking ethic. May God be with you and your family at this time.
Love you my friend! Lisa Myers

Dear Joan, Kevin, Kathy, Amanda and Wendy. My heart goes out to you. Donnie was my first boss at age 11, and he had such a positive influence on me as young man. I learned so much from him, including the value of work, the importance of going a good job, to treat people with care and respect, the importance of teamwork, how to have fun and still get the job done. I had so much respect for him, and I was saddened to see his decline over the past few years. I won’t be able to attend the services, but please know that you are in my prayers, especially Joan. I will always remember Donnie running out of the house at 7 am on a warm summer day, saying “Let’s go, Shank. It’s time to get to work!”. I have many more great memories of my summers working on the farm. It was a priviledge to know him and learn from him. In many ways, he inspired me to be a better person. I know he is now in a better place, and I hope I see him again on the other side.

To Joan and all of Donnie’s loved ones ~ Our sincere condolonces at this very fragile time. Donnie was working alongside my brother, June on the day of his tragic fall. My mother recalled it over and over ~ She glanced out her kitchen window and saw Donnie come bounding down over the yard as fast as his legs could go, and even appeared to be swimming his arms in the air to get more speed. He was calling loudly, Get Help! He leaped over her porch and onto her yard and ripped the bedsheets off the washline, and ran back to the barn to do what he could to help as Nancy waited for the ambulance. Mother always expressed her gratitude for his care and quick thinking. Donnie’s days at the Barley farm were only the beginning; his success and his presence in the Agriculture Community of Manor Township is admirable.
Your care for Donnie throughout his illness and his final journey home is a real testimony to your love for him and your love for the God who has welcomed him home. Peace and Blessings to all of you in these upcoming days and as you remember him and continue his Honorable Legacy.

Dear Joan, my condolences to you and your family on the passing of Donnie. I am happy to have gotten to know him during our years at Stehman. I have great memories of the Christmas parties at your house where we played a game with gifts. And Sunday School picnics and softball games. One summer he took on our daughter Abby to help bring in tobacco. She was so happy she got to work for Donnie. She also came home with a lot of your topsoil on her. Great times and memories of a fine man.

Our sincere sympathy to Joan, all the children and grandchildren during this time of huge loss. Donnie was such a hard working man! I remember him working for my dad right after high school and making sure our farm ran smoothly after Dad’s tragic accident and during his long hospital stay. Praising God Donnie is free at last of his broken earthly body and is rejoicing in Heaven!
