Doris J. Shaeffer, 75

Doris J. Shaeffer, 75, formerly of Lancaster, died Friday, April 18, 2014, at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late James A. Firestone and Pearl J. Mattis Firestone Hauser. She was the wife of Lynwood W. Shaeffer for 42 years before his death in January, 2000.
She graduated from J.P. McCaskey High School in 1956 and was employed by Bell Telephone and Woolworths in Lancaster, and was bookkeeper for her husband at the Lancaster Yellow Cab Company. Doris was also the office assistant at Royer’s Flowers before retiring.
Doris was a member of Church of The Apostles UCC, where she sang in the choir and enjoyed church activities. She was active in the James Buchanan Chapter No. 315 and Columbia Chapter No. 366 O.E.S., and a member of the Grand Guardian Council, Job’s Daughters International.
Her many interests included marching band, ice skating and roller skating, dancing, singing, playing the marimba, gardening, particularly pansies, counted cross stitch, crocheting, traveling, cooking, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. Doris always enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Doris is survived by her five children, Sharon L. Shaeffer of Lancaster, Wanda S. Bomberger, wife of Robert of Reinholds, Brian E. Shaeffer, husband of Sandra, Lancaster, Twila L. Dowling of Basking Ridge, NJ and Miles J. Shaeffer of Lancaster; She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Rachael Carucci, Scott Savarese, Chris Savarese, Justin Keller, Blake Bomberger,Gretchen Bomberger, Jared Shaeffer, Nathan Shaeffer, Heather Shaeffer, Alexander Shaeffer and Austin Shaeffer as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Mark Carucci, Jr. and Gianna Carucci; a stepbrother Paul Carvelle and 3 cousins, Rev. Charles Martzall, Linda Kreider and Rick Martzall along with many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her stepmother Helen A. Firestone and her grandson Shawn Keller.
A Viewing will be held 6-9 PM Tuesday, April 22, 2014, with Order of the Eastern Star and Job’s Daughters International services beginning at 8:30 PM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. On Wednesday, April 23, 2014, an additional Viewing will be held 10-10:45 AM, followed by the Funeral at 11 AM at the Church of the Apostles U.C.C., 1850 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA, with Rev. Kathryn L. Kuhn and Rev. Charles H. Martzall, Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Grand Guardian Council, Job’s Daughters International, “Memorial Scholarship Fund” in the memo, c/o Linda Bates, PO Box 650, Dillsburg, PA 17109.
