Dorothy “Dottie” L. Hannaway, 91

January 24, 2024

Dorothy L. Hannaway, 91, passed away at Calvary Homes, Lancaster, PA, on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. Born in Norristown, PA on February 19,1932 to her loving parents, the late Harry G. and Marion E. (Ginther) Hannaway.

Dottie graduated from Norristown High School in 1950 and began working for James Lees & Sons Carpet Manufacturers. After graduation from Philadelphia Bible Institute in 1957, she started working at Manna Bible Institute, a Christ-centered School of Biblical Education in center city Philadelphia as Office and Bookstore Manager. She left in 1974 to pursue her B.A. at Philadelphia College of Bible.

Dottie combined her joy of teaching God’s Word and her love for children, during her 22 years at the Light of the World Chapel in South Philadelphia. She taught summer school, vacation Bible school, and Pioneer Girls. Following the years at Manna and the Chapel, she began teaching elementary education at Calvary Christian School (near Charleston, SC) and then 18 years at the Arlington Baptist School in Baltimore, MD. During the early years at ABS, she earned her Master of Education at Loyola College in Baltimore.

Dottie retired in the early 1990’s and moved to her beloved Calvary Homes in Lancaster, PA. She became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she spent almost 10 years assisting and co-teaching second grade Sunday school.

A wonderful, respected teacher, Dottie maintained lifelong friendships with many of her students.

In earlier years, Dottie enjoyed spending summers with her dear friend, the late Alice Woodward, at her cabin on Moosehead Lake in Maine. She enjoyed keeping the family history and dearly loved her family.

Dottie’s family includes her niece Pamela Quittner of Royersford, niece Jeannine Veigel of Chester Springs, nephew John Scarborough of Trappe, niece Jennifer Hulswit of Boyertown, great nieces, and great nephews: Jessica Quittner, Kyle Quittner, Lyndsay Messner, Emma Pocklington, Joe Scarborough, Jacob Hulswit and Rachel Hulswit; several great great nieces and nephew, and her cousins, Dorian Hannaway of Los Angeles, CA and Carol Hannaway of Atco, NJ. David Hannaway of Corville, OR and his daughters, Kayleen and Kourtney, Beth Hannaway Norris of Tampa, FL and Gordon and Holly Hannaway of Tampa, FL and their children Randy and Sheila. Their son, Darrell, died in 2012.

Condolences to the Family

Miss Hannaway was my First Grade teacher and the first teacher I ever held high respect for.  She was an inspiration to me, personally, and I imagine many others.  I did talk to her a few years back.  I will miss her all the reaming days of my life. As I look in my Bible I see where she wrote a Navaho version of Psalms 23 Proverbs 3:5,6. May 30, 1977

She was my 2nd grade teacher at Arlington Baptist High School. She taught me how to properly hold a pencil amongst so many other things. What a great human she was. She is enjoying her time with our Lord and Saviour now. God Bless her!

Miss Hannaway was my 1st grade teacher (back in the late 70s!) at Arlington Baptist.  I still have a postcard she sent me the summer before starting the school year.  She loved Jesus and shared that love with everyone she met.  Upon graduating from Arlinton Baptist high schoool, she gave all her former students an Oswald Chambers devotional book.  I still have that as well.  When I joined a mission organization, she was one of the first people I thought of who would be exicted about that and would faithfully pray.  I live in NC now, but many times when visiting family in Carlisle, our family would take time to visit her in Lancaster. During one visit, we ate at the dining hall at Calvary Homes, and she really wanted to eat her desert first, so she did! She was such a professional / classy lady, that it was fun seeing her act like that!
In her later years, when her vision was poor, I would call her and share updates.  She loved reminising about her days at Arlington and her friends. She will be missed dearly, but we are rejoicing as is Heaven!

I didn’t get to know Dorothy until she was pretty much confined to bed when I visited on behalf of her church family. Time with her was always encouraging. She was a lovely person and knew the love of her Savior. I will miss her.
Here’s the last verse of her favorite poem which says much about her life…
“Therefore go gladly to the task assigned thee,
Having My promise; needing nothing more
Than just to know where’er the future find thee,
In all thy journeying, I go before.”

She was a great lady!

I remember Miss Hannaway from Arlington Baptist School where she taught my child. They shared the same birthday. She was a loving, kind and gentle lady. So sorry to hear of her passing.
