Dorothy M. Hess, 91

August 07, 2024

Dorothy M. Hess, 91, formerly of Mount Joy and Marietta, passed away on August 7, 2024.

She was the loving wife of the late Homer G. Hess, who passed away on May 1, 2024 after sharing 69 years of marriage. Born in Strasburg, she was the daughter of the late Roy R. and Dorothy E. Brubaker Shultz.

Dorothy and Homer started a dairy farm in the late 1950s in Marietta, which is still in operation today by succeeding Hess family generations. She was a strong supporter of the family farm, being very involved in the day to day operations. When they retired from the farm life, they found continued enjoyment in tending to the earth in their garden, which overflowed with vegetables and every variety of berries you could hope for.

She was an excellent cook and baker, and loved to can vegetables and fruit. Dorothy had been a longtime member of a local farm womens’ group over the years.

She had a strong love for her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and loved to help others whenever she could. She also had enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends to many destinations, with a highlight being when they drove to Alaska and back.

Dorothy was a long-time member of Bossler Mennonite Church in Elizabethtown, where she had served on the kitchen and funeral meal committee and various other duties.

She is survived by her children: Cindy Hess, Sharon Hostetter (wife of Elvin), Ed Hess (husband of Julie), and Eugene Hess (husband of Susan); seven grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; her son-in-law William Nicholas, and by her siblings: Harold married to Alma Shultz and Charles married to Alta Shultz. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Nicholas, and her brothers: Lester, Wilbur, and Robert.

Friends will be received by Dorothy’s family on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10-11AM at Bossler Mennonite Church, 2021 Bossler Rd., Elizabethtown, PA 17022, with the celebration of life to follow at 11AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bossler Mennonite Church at the above address.
