Douglas C. Herr, 62
Douglas C. Herr, 62, of Peach Bottom, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 18, 2012.
He was the loving husband of the late Catherine M. Abel Herr, who passed away in 2009. The two were the true definition of soul mates. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Edward W. Jr. and Dorothy M. Saurbaugh Herr.
Doug had worked as a welder for the Heil Company for 22 years. After his retirement, he worked part time at Grand Rental Station. Prior to working at Heil, he had worked at Trojan Yacht as a fabricator.
He enjoyed fishing, going to Delaware Park to play the slots, and was well known for his luck with them. He also spent a good deal of time sitting in his chair, sharing stories full of wisdom and quick wit. Doug was loved by everyone who knew him and he was the type of man to give you the shirt off of his own back. He loved his grandchildren very much and enjoyed spending time with them, teaching them and caring for them every way he could. His best friend after the passing of Catherine was their dachshund, Sprocket.
He was a US Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War, and was a life member of AmVets Post 19.
Doug is survived by his two daughters, Sherry Lynn Herr of Middle River, MD and Lisa Herr of Peach Bottom and his four grandchildren Karena Herr, Douglas Irizarry, Grace Davis fiancee of Donald Burkey, and Evan Davis. He is also survived by his siblings: Edward Jr married to Pam Herr of Woolwich, ME, Patricia Ann married to Jere Lintner of Peach Bottom, Ronnie married to Judy Herr of Ridgeville, SC, and William Herr of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa.
Friends will be received on Saturday, September 1, 2012 from 10-11AM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 E. King St., Lancaster, PA, with the Memorial Service to follow at 11AM. Interment in Riverview Burial Park. Doug is at peace with my sister, Cathy, his love for her was always in his heart. He told me at times he was waiting for the day to be with her, and sadly to us living that day has come, but for Doug I can just see that smile on his face as he is together with Cathy.

I grew up living across the street from the Herr family. Sherry was in my grade in school, and Lisa was in my sister’s class. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Doug’s senseless death. My deepest condolences to Sherry and Lisa….you are both in my thoughts.

Our hearts were saddened to hear of Dougs death. We have so many memories of him and Cathy and our times together when we lived in Lancaster and worshipped together with them at School House Road Baptist Church. Our joy is knowing that Doug and Cathy are together again with our Lord. Our prayers and love to Lisa and Sherry. Hope you will keep in touch.

We are so very deeply -deeply saddened by your passing, you were a fine neighbor and friend. I thank you for sharing your grandchildren with us over the years and for keeping a very watchful eye on our children. We all enjoyed your company and appreciated your views of life and the history of our "hollow" – we know you are at peace now with your beloved wife Cathy. We will miss you very much.
With heavy hearts,

Sherry, I am so sorry for the loss you have endured. I remember your dad from when we were little, I am very blessed to have known him. May you have solace in knowing your dad is in heaven where he has found his soul mate again. My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

I was fortunate to know the Herr family as a child. I always remember their humor and true loving nature. Doug’s smile is infectious. Much love to the family.
