E. Vernon McKaig, 91

E. Vernon McKaig, 91, of Lancaster, died Tuesday afternoon, July 3, 2007, at The Glen at Willow Valley.

He was the husband of Margaret K. (Kirlin) McKaig, with whom he celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary this past January 17th. Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Franklyn W. and Dorothy Vernon McKaig.

Vernon had worked in the finance department for the E. I.  DuPont Company in Wilmington for 34 years.

He was graduate of Wilmington High School in 1934, and a graduate of Beacom College. After his military service in World War II, he returned to study and graduate from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, with a BA in Finance and Business.

A US Army veteran of World War II, Vernon served as a Tech 4 in the 29th Infantry Division in the European Theater. He landed at Normandy and served until Sept. 1945. He received the Bronze Star Medal for excelling in his performance of duty under General Gerhardt.

He enjoyed listening to classical and jazz music and attended the Philadelphia Orchestra as a season subscriber for over 40 years. He was also an avid Philadelphia sports fan and loved to travel, read, and talk politics.

Vernon was a member of St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, Vernon is survived by 2 children, Robert T.  married to Loretta P. Lori McKaig of Philiadelphia, and Ann M. married to Michael J. O’Brien of Lancaster, and 10 grandchildren: Robert and Lauren, Christina, Matthew, Kathleen, Kevin, Thomas, Anne, Christopher, Katherine and Thomas. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Bower.

Friends will be received on Friday from 9-10:30AM from the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home, 441 N. George St., Millersville, PA, with the funeral service to follow at 11AM at St. Philip The Apostle Catholic Church, 2111 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, PA. Interment in Riverview Gardens Cemetery in Wilmington, DE. Please omit flowers, making contributions in Vernon’s memory to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Dr., Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.
