Earl “Jerry” Shaub, 80

November 28, 2024

Earl J. Shaub, Jr. met God in Heaven on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2024. He was 80 years old and was the son of Earl J. and Maguerite A. (Hertzler) Shaub.

Earl, known by some by his nickname “Jerry,” was a lifelong resident of the Lancaster area.

While attending Wickersham Elementary school he was selected to be the original “Pequea Pete” – a symbol for Lancaster’s Red Feather Community Chest. He visited hospitals throughout the state, distributing gifts and hope to needy children.

After graduating Lancaster Township Junior High, Jerry attended Penn Manor High School where he achieved 9 varsity letters in soccer, basketball, and baseball. While at Penn Manor he enjoyed being president of both his junior and senior classes, athletic association, key club, and National Honor Society. Jerry entered the Penn Manor Sports Wall of Honor in 2006.

After high school Jerry attended the University of Maryland on a full soccer scholarship and graduated in 1967 with an industrial engineering degree. He returned to Lancaster to run the family-owned Boas Fruit Market business. During the 1980s, when the sparkler form of fireworks were first legalized, he spent much of his time working with municipalities throughout the state, establishing the legality of new products. This resulted in a position on the State Board of Pyrotechnics and over 2000 stores being served with products, and then the first roadside tent sales.

Jerry retired from full-time work in 1994 at age 50. He used his retirement years to enjoy life and occasionally work projects as a business consultant and financial advisor to struggling businesses. He also enjoyed dabbling in commercial real estate investments.

He enjoyed playing, coaching, and watching sports his entire life. As a player/coach he was a member of ten different State Championship fast-pitch softball teams over a 40-year involvement in the sport. Jerry enjoyed fishing his whole life, maintaining a summer place in Havre de Grace, Maryland for almost 50 years. While he also enjoyed golf, basketball, dancing, and casino trips, the activities schedule of his thirteen grandchildren usually came first. Jerry rarely missed a grandchild’s event.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Hurst), the true love of his life for over 45 years; and four children: Deborah, wife of Dean Ober and their children Holly, (wife of Tim Deubler); Brittany, Justin, (husband of Kirstyn) and Brooke; Brian and wife Michelle and their children Danielle, (wife of Joe Cuce) Erica, and Samantha; Kevin and wife Traci and their children Lindsey, Kellie, and Brady; and Erin, wife of Cody Park and their family Camden, Landen, and Clementine. Jerry is also survived by five great-grandchildren: one brother, Richard, and his wife, Helen.

A visitation will take place from 4 to 5:30 pm, followed by the funeral at 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 12, 2024, with The Rev. Kerry Leeper officiating, at Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick Street, Millersville, PA 17551. Interment in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery will take place Friday, December 13, 2024, at 2 pm.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Jerry’s passing, and I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your family during this difficult time.
Although I didn’t have the privilege of knowing Jerry personally, I feel I have come to know him through the lasting impact he made on my grandson, Brycen. Cyndi – yours and Jerry’s kindness in taking him to play golf and go fishing, and teaching him how to tie a knot, has left a profound mark on his life. I’ve heard so much about his fun adventures with you, Jerry, and Camden. These moments created cherished memories that my grandson will carry with him forever.
It is clear that Jerry’s generosity and warmth touched many lives, including my family’s. Please know that his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he inspired. I hope you can find comfort in knowing how much Jerry meant to so many. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest condolences to Cindi and the children on the passing of Jerry Shaub. I got to know Jerry and his family when he put a fastpitch team into the Southern Church League years ago. We had many conversations over those years in the league and after. I had a deep respect for Jerry as a person and for his business acumen. I also got to know his sons  (as players) and daughters (one who pitched at Catholic). What pleasant and polite children! I saw Jerry and Cindi not that long ago at a restaurant in Willow Street. That was the last time I talked to Jerry. Didn’t and couldn’t know it would be our last conversation. I now live in Pittsburgh and will not be able to attend the services because of obligations here. My thoughts are with Cindi and all family members.

I’m pleased that I got to see Earl several times in the past few years including our 60th high school reunion. We spent many hours together on the soccer and basketball teams…he was quite the athlete! My sincere sympathy to the family. Bill Forrey
