Elizabeth “Betty” Holmes, 80

September 03, 2018

Elizabeth “Betty” Holmes, 80, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday morning September 3, 2018 at Lancaster General Hospital, the result of an illness suffered while celebrating her “significant birthday” with her family on a Caribbean Cruise. Betty was the much beloved wife of Marty Holmes who was more in love with her than he was when he met her at a 4-H fair over 60 years ago. They married in Dunstable, MA, April 18, 1959. Born Easter Sunday April 17, 1938 in Pepperell, MA, she was the only daughter of Robert L.W. & Ethel M. (Tully) Farmer.
Betty was a graduate of Pepperell High School and Nashua Business College and had worked for Dohler Cards, Dennison Mfg. and was a real estate broker in Allentown and Lancaster, retiring from Berkshire Hathaway Home Sales Services, Lancaster in 2016. She had a very strong Christian faith with a warm personality who was a devoted member of the Church of the Apostles where she was always involved in the daily life of the Church including past member of the Consistory and the Church Life group; power pack lunch program and was a lay caregiver as a Stephen Minister and travelled on a mission trip to Honduras.
Betty believed “Can’t” wasn’t in the dictionary and immersed herself in every group she joined including 4-H club leader, Sunday School teacher, President of both Homestead Village Auxiliary and Ladies Coterie organization where she was honored in 2014 with the “Round Tuit” award. She belonged to the Conestoga Country Club, Gourmet Cooking Club and her varied interests included gardening, reading, scrapbooking, playing bridge, cross word puzzles, comics, travelling and gathering with her many friends and family taking a sincere interest in their lives. She was usually the first to send greeting cards. Her greatest enjoyment came from spending time with her family and providing emotional support for all their endeavors and attending activities. “Grammy” adored her grandchildren and brought them on many special trips she planned including Washington, DC, NY, Hawaii, White Mountains, Galápagos Islands, the Greek Islands and Bermuda.
In addition to her husband she was the loving mother of Jim Holmes and his wife Cheryl of Westboro, MA; Jeff Holmes and his wife Jane of Lansdale; and Judy Pertet of Reading; 4 grandchildren: Lauren Holmes and her companion, Jason DeLuca of Maytown; Christopher Holmes of Lansdale; Erica and her husband Tom Davidson of Hackettstown, NJ; Jonah Pertet of Reading, PA; 4 brothers, George Farmer and his wife, Dottie; Fred Farmer; Jim Farmer, all of Pepperell, MA; Bob Farmer and his wife Karin of Marlboro, MA; 2 sisters in law, Irene Brown of Southborough, MA and Ellen Temple of Arnold, MO; nieces and nephews, and many close cousins.
A viewing will be held on Friday, September 7, 2018, from 11 AM-1 PM at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM at the Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603. Interment will follow at Conestoga Memorial Park, Lancaster. Memorial contributions in Betty’s memory may be offered to the Church of the Apostles at the above address.

Dear Marty and family, My deepest condolences to you. I worked for Betty at Coldwell Banker. I think it was in the 90s. She was such an accomplished woman and was always bright, energetic and kind. I was thrilled to be invited to your 50th wedding anniversary party at the country club, and it was a GREAT event. The world lost an amazing woman.Thinking of you.

My sincerest condolences to the entire Holmes family.  Betty was a wonderful friend to both ofour parents Lynne and Terry Packard.  She waswarm and caring to all of us throughout our lives.  Iwill always remember her trying to teach me to sew in 4H club…that never really stuck but she absolutely gave me an appreciation  and love of cooking!
