Emily Taylor Garber, 28

February 23, 2025

Emily Taylor Garber, 28, passed away on Sunday, February 23rd. She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on March 20th 1996. Emily is survived by her husband Grant Garber, sister Chelsey Ott, and parents Tim and Jane Ott.

Emily came into the earth bright, compassionate, and deeply invested in the lives of those around her. Her empathetic nature, infectious spirit, and joyous optimism endeared her to everyone she met. In her free time, Emily loved reading, theater, and traveling, including trips to Disney World and Europe with her family. She graduated summa cum laude from Millersville University with a major in early childhood education and a minor in Spanish and taught elementary school for several years.

Emily met Grant in school, where they became high school sweethearts at ages 15 and 17. They lived a full life together—travels to Montana, Thailand and Italy, vacations in Maine, and a trip to Paris, where Grant proposed to Emily in front of the Eiffel Tower. Despite many health obstacles, theirs was a life-changing kind of love.

In recent years, Grant and Emily enjoyed rides through Strasburg on their homemade cargo bike, outfitted specifically for Emily to explore the outdoors with her oxygen tank. Although they didn’t have a dog of their own, there wasn’t a dog that met her that didn’t sense her sweet spirit and love her. She kept toys at her house for visiting pets and babies. She loved animals and children the way she loved everyone in her life—selflessly and unconditionally.

Emily adored iced chai lattes and chats with her friends. When the weather was nice, she could be found reading a book or spending time with loved ones in her backyard, enjoying the peace and sunshine. She filled the lives of her family and friends with endless support, joy, wisdom and selfless care. Her capacity for kindness was unmatched.

Emily beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma with chemo, radiation and a bone marrow transplant. She beat breast cancer and was fighting pulmonary fibrosis, while anxiously awaiting the gift of new lungs. She fought all of these health conditions courageously until the end.

Emily’s life was one of faith and love. She leaned into her spiritual questions instead of away from them and made the brave choice of hope daily. There are few lives more sincere or vulnerable in their faith than Emily’s. Anyone privileged enough to be a witness to this is forever changed. Though she was small, she was mighty; the gift of her life is a tremendous blessing. The ripple effect is traveling further and touching more deeply than she, or any of us, will ever know.

Sending you off with full breaths to your forever home Emily. You will be carried forever in the hearts of those lucky enough to be loved by you.

Emily’s service will be held on Saturday March 1st. The visitation will be held at 1:30pm with a memorial service to follow at 3:30pm at Willow Street Mennonite Church. A live stream option is available at https://www.willowstreetmennonite.com/watch/. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Compassion International.

There are not enough words in existence to properly express how sad, tragic, and heart-wrenching Emily’s passing is. In the many, many years I spent at the railroad, I had the incredible fortune & opportunity to have so many wonderful “kids” work for me. Emily was truly one of the special ones. Always cheerful, always upbeat, always smiling – through the good & the not-so-good of whatever life threw her way. Those of us who were lucky enough to share even a small portion of her journey, should be infinitely grateful for that opportunity. The bigger plan is not always revealed to us and Emily will continue to touch lives in other ways, but the world is a absolutely less bright without Emily in it. Although I am unable to attend her celebration of life, I would like to pass along my deepest sympathies for your loss. Wishing you all comfort, peace, & healing.

I have so many fond memories of working with Emily as her academic advisor and professor during her time at Millersville. She was such a thoughtful and positive person, an excellent student, and a passionate educator of young learners. My heart goes out to her family and friends; please know that you are in my prayers as you mourn your loss and celebrate her life that touched so many.

I was so sad to hear this news. Emily was one of our son Nate’s closest friends at L-S.  It was so much fun watching them act together in Mulan! She was so cheerful and positive, along with being very talented. She has left her mark!

Dear Grant, Jane, Tim , and Chelsey:
Our hearts ache for all of you at this most difficult time. Emily was an angel amongst all of us and now Heaven has received the most beautiful bright light ever! We  all have our journeys—but Emily’s journey was such a lesson to us and testimony of her walk with God each and every day and not just sometimes or when she needed it. She inspired us all with the hope she carried, the grace she showed, how positive she always was no matter how bad she felt  and we are so grateful to have witnessed this and be a part of it through the years.  Praying peace beyond all understanding to you all and may you be reminded that you were there every step of the way, encouraging her, and loving her to give her even more hope that she carried each day. We extend our most sincere sympathy and pray for you all and our hope is that her bright light will warm your heart and ease the pain as you move forward without your dear Emily by your side.
With all our love,
Bev & Jim & family

Blessings and condolences on such a young and tragic loss. She is truly in her forever home; however, she has left her breath of life on all the lives she influenced by her faith and teaching. She will certainly be missed; however, she will live on in all who knew and loved her.

I have not really spent time with Emily nor seen her since she was a little blondie bouncing into church…but I have known her story through her parents and my sister, and felt like I knew  her. I prayed for her often, as we all felt such a gentle, kind soul should spend more time among us…The words in this write up describe perfectly her beautiful soul … and reading it, I couldn’t help think …If I could leave half that impression on this world, I would feel complete. I think we will carry forward her message that the blessing of today should not be taken for granted. Wrap your heart around those little moments you share with your loved ones. That is Emily’s message and we thank her forevermore. God bless her family as they grieve such a loss. ❤️🙏🏼❤️
