George E. Vernau, Jr., 92

January 29, 2024

George E. Vernau, Jr., 92, of Lititz, passed away on January 29, 2024.

He was the husband of the late Geraldine R. “Gerry” Stoner Vernau, who passed away in 2013. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late George E. and Margaret Gochenour Vernau.

A US Navy veteran, George served during the Korean War as Aviation Electronics Technician from 1951 to 1954. Following his discharge, he served in the Naval Reserves.

George worked 35 years for the RCA Corporation as an Electronics Technician Leader. After retirement, he also worked part-time for Armstrong World Industries.

George actively volunteered his entire life including Cub Scouts, Burrowes Elementary School Festivals, and McCaskey High School concession stand. He also organized pallbearers for local funeral homes for over 10 years. A highly active member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, he volunteered regularly in the office and was the head usher for the early services. He organized and directed many of the Senior Shepherd activities including the very popular bus trips. While living at Luther Acres, he was a very active volunteer running the mini grocery store and helping with the mail.

George and Gerry coordinated backyard picnics for over 30 years at their former neighborhood of Jamaica and Ranck Mill Roads.

A well-known 33rd degree Mason, George was a member of Lancaster Lodge 43, the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, the Harrisburg Consistory, and the Shriners Club.
He was quite the handyman, able to fix most anything that needed to be fixed.

George is survived by his children: G. Douglas Vernau of Lancaster, Denise married to Harold Troupe of East Petersburg, and Debra married to Elwood Rye of Lancaster; his 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Friends will be received by George’s family on Saturday, February 10, 2024 from 10-11AM at the Charles F. Snyder Jr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA . There will be a Masonic Funeral Service beginning at 11AM with the Memorial Service to follow. Interment will be private. Condolences to the Family

June 19, 2024

I am very saddened to see this obit today. Wish I had known at the time. George was the last of a close group of friends from the East Hempfield class of 1949 that included my father. For many years, they got together one Friday night each month to play poker. Actually, they got together more to share old stories, drink beer, eat and enjoy their friendship. George was the comedian in the group … a very funny and fun guy. Another era has passed. My deepest condolences to the family.

Dear Debbie and Family,
I was sorry to read of your father’s passing. I remember him volunteering at McCaskey and Burrowes and even from way back when both parents attended your Lincoln concerts. Hope you and the family are doing well.  Dave Rentschler
