George Thomas Castanzo, 60
April 7, 1964 - January 18, 2025
George Thomas Castanzo, 60, passed away peacefully at Lancaster General Hospital on January 18, 2025.
Born on April 7, 1964, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late George J. Castanzo, DDS, and Marjorie (Brock) Castanzo.
George graduated from South Catholic High School and the University of Scranton where he earned his MBA in business and marketing. George began his career in banking and insurance, then moved to inside sales positions at companies throughout Pennsylvania. Later in his career, he held positions at drug and alcohol treatment facilities in York and Lancaster Counties. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others. He was especially proud of his nine years of sobriety.
George was a lifelong Pittsburg Steelers and Notre Dame football fan. He was an active member of his community, volunteering for various causes and organizations, especially those related to drug and alcohol treatment. George made friends wherever he went with his easy going, approachable personality and big smile. From childhood through his adult years, he loved spending time at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.
He is survived by his sons, George and Robert, both residing in Scranton; sister Kathlene Anacarto, Bear Creek, PA; brother James, Lancaster; sister Christine, Scranton; sister Marie Taylor, Taylor, PA; brother Paul, Malvern, PA; and brother Michael, Scranton; and his dearest friend and companion Julie Cole, East Petersburg. He was preceded in death by his sister Marjorie (Waibel).
George’s family would like to thank the Lancaster General Hospital’s ICU staff for the incredible care George received during his 18-day stay. Their care, compassion, and professionalism was so greatly appreciated.
A private celebration of George’s life will be held in Scranton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in George’s memory to White Deer Run of Lancaster, 53 N. West End Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603, or the American Diabetes Association.

Dear Marie and Family,We are so sorry for the loss of your brother George. We remember all of you on vacation in Ocean City, Md. as your family and ours were there at the same time. It was all such great fun. I recall we took some of the Castanzo’s in our car because your mom and dad couldn’t fit all of you and luggage in your station wagon. Those were the good old days. We will keep you all in our thoughts and prayers.

Kathy, Jim, Chrissy, Marie, Paul and Mike, my deepest condolences to you all! Growing up together with The Castanzo family was the best part of life. With Georgie and I being 10 months apart in age, we would hang out in the third floor as teenagers smoking cigarettes and listening to music of the day whileshooting the breeze. George certainly had some difficult challenges in his life but he managed to learn from them and give back in a way to help anyone and everyone in his presence. George had a great sense of humor and loved bantering with my mom of a cup of coffee and a cigarette whenever they were in the same room together. I am pretty certain they’ve reunited in heaven and have resumed their shenanigans.
