Gerald R. Handel, 82

July 15, 2024

Gerald R. Handel, 82, of Willow Street, passed away on Monday, July 15, 2024, at Lancaster General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Cynthia (Thomas) Handel and the son of the late Edna (Striggle) and Claude F. Handel.

A devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lancaster, Gerald dedicated his professional life to working as a Computer Programmer for the City of Lancaster before his retirement.

In his free time, Gerald enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He loved hiking, often exploring local trails. His adventurous spirit also led him to travel. One of his favorite pastimes was embarking on riverboat cruises, with Cindy where they could relax.

Gerald is survived by his sister-in-law Susan Anderson, wife of Roy, of Harrison City, PA; brother-in-law Thomas Thomas, husband of Nancy, of Bear, DE; nieces and nephews: Tara Robinson (Rion) of MD, Troy Anderson of Pittsburgh, Steven Thomas (Hayley) of IN, Jessica Klingler (John) of NY, Julie Bost (Dan) of VA, and Sharon Handel; as well as many great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings Eugene F. Handel and Frances Kiehl. He will be missed by his beloved dog Kristi.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, July 18, 2024, at the Charles F. Snyder III Funeral Home and Crematory, 2421 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA 17584. Family and friends will be received from 10 AM until the time of service. Burial will be private.

Condolences to the Family

I just heard of Jerry’s passing. I have many fond memories of seeing him and his beloved Narnia at mass at St. Mary’s. He was a comforting presence.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his and all the souls of the faithfully departed, by the Mercy of God, Rest In Peace.  John Claus

To Jerry’s family:
We absolutely adored sitting with him at mass and hearing his wonderful stories (and sometimes him trying to persuade a furry friend to not sit on our laps!). We will greatly miss seeing him there and enjoying his company. Our prayers are with all of you in this time of loss.

dear family of Jerry,
it is with great sadness i learned of Jerry’s death.  Jerry was a teacher – he once in lieu of a sermon, at mass, gave a talk to the children there, telling them how to  tell what a dollar bill is and many other ways of coping while being blind.  he was always positive and loved being at St Mary’s.  I will miss him.
