Jack D. Wissing, 88
November 16, 2024
Jack David Wissing, 88, of East Petersburg, passed away at home surrounded by family on November 16, 2024. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Oscar and Alice (Hacker) Wissing. He was married over 66 years to his beloved and devoted wife, Mary Jane “Janie” (Butzer) Wissing.
Jack worked for MAC-It Corporation and National Bearings, retiring in February of 1999 after 45 years of being a machinist and foreman. He was a founding member and one of the original builders of the Big Hope Hunting Club in Waterville, PA, where he often pursued his passion for hunting and fishing and family vacations. Jack could also be found on the softball field coaching girls’ softball during the 70s. He also spent many days in the stands cheering on his children and grandchildren through their various pursuits. Known for his quick wit, Jack was a formidable opponent in any competition, from the backyard to the bowling alleys to the kitchen table where he enjoyed all types of games. He was an excellent card player, especially pinochle.
He was aptly named “Jack” as he truly was a jack-of-all-trades. He was a farmer, plumber, carpenter, electrician, architect, and auto mechanic, although he was not formally trained in any of these occupations and at a time when there weren’t YouTube videos to teach these skills.
In addition to his wife Janie, he is survived by 4 children: David L. Wissing, Linda M. Koone (Jeffrey), Karen L. Flick (Jere), and Kathy A. Rineer; 3 grandchildren: Elyse Flick (Nate Gill), Rita Newton (William), and Alec Koone; 2 great-grandchildren: Rose Newton and Henry Gill; brother Charles R. Wissing, and various cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Thomas W. Wissing.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to all of the caring and compassionate support provided by the personnel at Hospice & Community Care, friends, neighbors, and extended family who have been so helpful through this long journey.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Jack’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, stjude.org, or to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17601.
