James E. Hunter, 71
April 10, 2023
James E. Hunter, age 71, passed away at his home on April 10, 2023. He was born to the late Lewis and Elsie (Atkinson) Hunter in Parkersburg, West Virginia.
Jim married Sandy Love on August 16, 1975 and later had two children: Roxannah and David.
Jim found tremendous joy riding his bike. When he was young, he used his bike to deliver newspapers. After he had his children, he attached a child seat to the back and took them for rides around the Clay Road homestead. In his later years, Jim found spin class and discovered a love for riding in sync to upbeat tunes.
Jim’s devotion to cycling over the years mirrors his dedication to his work. He never called in sick or complained about long distance sales calls. He learned the technical aspects of the control valves with the expertise of an engineer. His MBA from Shippensburg remains one of Jim’s most cherished accomplishments.
Jim also loved cheering for his favorite sports teams. A Pennsylvania resident, he found himself outnumbered in his uncompromising support of the Ohio State Buckeyes. When college football wasn’t in season, he was on the sidelines of a soccer field or in the stands at a field hockey game cheering with the intensity of a proud parent.
Jim was a man of motion- a vital characteristic robbed by his ALS diagnosis. Handling the small aircraft he once piloted in his thirties and walking to his tree stand during hunting season became cherished memories rather than activities to enjoy in retirement.
Overall, Jim was a man of consistency and devotion: married 47 years, peddled 5,000 miles/year, and ate Turkey Hill ice cream every night. He loved his granddaughter, Elaina, fiercely and always had a warm lap for his grandcat, Bodhi.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sandy K. Hunter of Mount Joy; two children: Roxannah Hunter of Lancaster and David Hunter (fiancé of Hannah Cleckner) of Palmyra; one grandchild: Elaina Hunter; five siblings: Joyce Mead, Janice Felo, Jeanne Hunter, Joanne Else and John Hunter as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends at LCBC, 2392 Mount Joy Rd, Manheim, PA 17545 on Friday April 21, 2023 with a celebration of Jim’s life that will begin at 2pm. Burial will be private.

Hello Jim’s Family,
I knew Jim from spin class. He brightened the room with his perpetual smile and quick wit. I will never forget him, as he coined my nickname FBI (Full Blooded Italian). You can only imagine the fun everyone had with him in class. Rest in Peace young man. To me you will always be forever young.

Dear Sandy, Roxannah and David, our hearts ache at the news that Jim went to be with the Lord last week. Be assured of our prayers and this time of grief. Jim last called to talk with me, Peter, 3 weeks prior to his homegoing. Linda remembers so many special times of her family and yours – many visits, many fun moments, photos to treasure and so much more. I, Peter, remember all of you and my years in Ephrata. May the Lord hold you fast to Himself in the coming days. We are so thankful that Jim rests in the arms of Jesus! Our HOPE is in the Lord!

My wife, Lynette, and I shared some of our formative years with Jim in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa in the 1970’s. We remember him with much fondness and enjoyed his smile and gracious spirit. Although we lost touch for many years we connected again in recent years. Our thoughts, love and condolences to Sandy and the children and to the broader Hunter family. RIP (Ride in Peace) Jim.

Uncle Jim, you are missed! I cherish the memories of visiting you, Aunt Sandy, David and Roxannah at your home in Lancaster and the many waffles you prepared for our family! Your jokes always had me laughing, I’m sure there are times when you were not smiling and joking but I don’t remember any of them! I’m sure the Amish already miss you passing them on your bike and challenging the horses to a race but I imagine you’re doing the same thing in a better place! You know you had 5 more good years! Tell grandpa and grandma hello for me and give them a big hug every time you bike over to see them! Miss you ,Jonathan Hunter
