James L. Sharber, Jr., age 99, of Willow Valley Communities, Lancaster PA passed away on March 14, 2025. Born in Newland NC, he was the son of James L. and Blanche Rhodes Sharber. He was predeceased by his parents and four older sisters. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Alexandra R. Sharber, sons J. Clifford (Linda) of Lincolnton NC and Richard C. (Susan) of Oakland NJ, and grandchildren, Justin, New Britain, CT, Elisabeth (Andrew Exner), Indianapolis IN and Seth (Diana), Belmont MA.
After graduating from Newland High School Jim moved to Norfolk VA and worked at the Naval Air Station until reporting for flight training in the Army Air Corps in 1944. Upon receiving an honorable discharge as an Aviation Cadet he attended NC State College where he received a degree in General Engineering in 1949. He worked for US Gypsum Co., Norfolk VA until 1952 when he began working at Du Pont Company at Spruance Rayon Plant, Richmond VA, followed by assignments at Chambers Works in NJ, General Services Department in Wilmington DE, Graphics Center in Boothwyn PA, retiring as Design Coordinator from Barley Mill Plaza, Wilmington DE in 1986. He resided in the Wilmington area until 1998 when he moved to Freedom Village Retirement Community in Coatesville PA and in 2014 to Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster PA.
He was continually active in his church serving as a deacon, Chair of Administrative Board, lay speaker and bible study leader. He was an active volunteer preparing taxes for the AARP Tax program, delivering for Meals on Wheels of Chester County, serving as a patient advocate at Brandywine Hospital, driving patients for the Coatesville VA, and instructing over 100 AARP Safe Driving classes.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
