James L. Murphy, 81
October 30, 2013
James L. Murphy, 81, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013. Born on January 16, 1932 in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Eileen (Flanagan) and James L. Murphy, Sr. Jim married Margaret (Gariola) in Bronx, NY on January 16, 1960, and they would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in January 2014.
After graduating high school from Marist, in Atlanta, GA, in1950, Jim attended Georgia Tech. He dropped out to join the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean conflict. Following his services in the USMC, he re-entered Georgia Tech and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. An avid Yellow Jackets fan, Jim always looked forward to the football and basketball seasons.
Jim joined the Naval Reserves (Seabees) in 1963 and retired as a Commander from the United States Navy in 1992. He took great pride in serving his country. Jim spent the bulk of his career (28 years) as an engineer at Armstrong World Industries. A life time member of the Knights of Columbus, he attended St. Anne’s Catholic Church. Jim, who is still waiting for “a visit from the PCH Prize Patrol!”, enjoyed spending time in the company of people of all ages. His hobbies included traveling, woodworking, wine making, reading and spending time with his family.
In addition to his lovely wife Margaret, Jim is survived by his children: Lee Ann Gregg (Jeff) of Lawrenceville, GA, James L. Murphy (Jane) of Lancaster, PA, Maura Kirchner (Donald) of Scranton, PA, and Christina Shackleford (David) of Paoli, PA; nine grandchildren; and two sisters: Lynn Otwell and Carol Engle. He was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Mothershed.
A Prayer Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 9 at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home & Crematory, 414 East King Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. Viewings will be held on Friday, November 8, from 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 929 North Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602.

Margaret and Family, Our hearts are broken for you and we send our love and condolences. Distance is an obstacle but we never forgot our time together when we lived close. So many good times at our respective houses, including wine tasting of Jim’s vintage. We will see you again when you have the next service, hopefully. Margaret, get well and strong and you will hear from us soon.
