John Charles Wylie, 88

March 01, 2025

John Charles Wylie, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the age of 88.

He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of the late Charles Bremner and Josephine V. Healy Wylie and grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business and was president of his senior class and was also a member of Sigma Chi fraternity.

John served six months in the United States Army which included five and a half years in the Army Reserve.

After college, John joined the Armstong Cork Company in 1959 as a sales trainee in the building products division. For the next 37 years he held a broad range of sales and management assignments, culminating with executive positions as group Vice President of Operations and Quality Management.

Following retirement from Armstrong in 1995, he spent a year teaching in the Business School of Elizabethtown College and two years with the Jay Group.
John was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church for over 63 years where he served as president of the trustees and served as an elder on the session.

He served as President of the Lancaster Country Club and a member of their Board for ten years. John was a strong supporter of the Water Street Ministries, both as a tutor and a mentor.

For most of John’s life he was an active participant in sports, particularly golf and tennis. He was also an avid fan of the University of Michigan Wolverines athletic teams.

What he was most proud of was his family-his wife of sixty-four years, Mary Louise, his daughter, Linda W. McCarty wife of Don, his son, John Scott Wylie husband of Kerrin, his five grandchildren, Joshua, Christopher, Elizabeth, Andrea and Caroline, as well as his great grandchildren, Caden, Julia, Brooke, Avi and CJ. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joan Smith.

A memorial service will be held at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 West Roseville Road, Lancaster, on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 11:00 AM with Senior Allison Beaulieu officiating. Dear Mary Louise
You have my deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved husband John. As you know we became wonderful friends through our love for University of Michigan sports, especially football. I will miss John very much and he will be in my prayers. Mary Ann and I will be in Florida next week and unfortunately will miss John’s services. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers especially during this time of grief.

Hi ML,
This is Chas Kopp from Armstrong days. Gwen and I would like to pass on our condolences to you and family.
I reported directly to John for eight years in the 80’s. During those years, we had great success in the Retail Ceilings business. We really made a difference and had a lot of fun doing it. That did not happen without John’s leadership.
John had a major impact on my business development. His no nonsense approach with a “can do” attitude, made a positive impression on me. John had a direct style with little filter. I always understood where he was coming from. Here made it clear where we had to go and what we had to do. His style made me and the organization productive.
I will never forget the phone call I had with John on 2/21/2025. His complete understanding of his situation plus the ability to communicate it in a thoughtful upbeat manner, was “classic Wylie”, impressive!
ML, take care of yourself and enjoy the memories. I hope we meet again.
Thanks, Chas Kopp – 717 368 1344
