John H. Hartman, Jr., 79, of Lancaster, passed away at his home November 29, 2021. Born and raised in Lancaster he was the son of the late John H. Hartman, Sr., and Ida Mae (Barnett) Hartman. He was the devoted and loving husband of Robert Wolf for over 50 years.

I live in Idaho and I recently received a gift from a friend who is from Philadelphia (or somewhere near there). It’s a hard-cover, bound copy of a play by Brian Friel called “Philadelphia Here I Come!” Inside, there’s a seal saying “Library of John H. Hartman.” So I goodgled it and found this obituary. Given the Pennsylvania connection, I thought maybe this is the same person who previously owned my book? If so, please note that I am enjoying it very much and I thought maybe you would appreciate knowing that John’s memory is living on in this way.

I could write volumes about my amazingly talented, caring and treasured friend. From our very first meeting at the Lancaster County Board of Assistance, we became fast friends. John’s artistry, from his tinsel paintings to something as simple as a beautifully fashioned jigsaw puzzle, shellacked and framed, was phenomenal. His Christmas trees were masterpieces, and, together with his loving Robert, he was part of a dynamic duo. I apologize for this unforgivably late entry, but I just learned of John’s passing. To his Love and my dear friend, Robert: you were the best person in John’s life, and the two of you were a winning combination, especially when it came to those dog shows! Robert, I send you my love and deepest sympathy, and I pray you will feel God’s eternal peace, love, comfort and strength surrounding you. And to my dear friend, John: What an amazing life well lived! Enter into your well-deserved and peaceful rest. I love you always.

Lancaster has lost a caring and talented soul,as has Robert. From my first encounter of John to my last, he was always a kind and caring person. May he Rest In Peace knowing the world was a better place while he was in it.

Robert, I am so sorry to hear about John. The world has lost 1 more bright light, especially the dog world. The memories I have from Red Rose training and the drills that we did always make me smile. John was truly a special gift to the world and I was truly blessed to have come to know both of you. May you find comfort in all the wonderful memories I’m sure that you and John created in the years that you were together. With deepest sympathy, Bert Brenner
