John R. Haverstick, 66
June 29, 2018
John R. Haverstick, aged 66, passed into the presence of the Lord on Friday, June 29, 2018 after a lengthy illness. John was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Kimberly E. Haverstick and his father, H. L. Haverstick.
John’s life was an example of the transformative power of a relationship with Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Central Manor Church where he was involved in a number of ways, including serving on the finance ministry team and being a mentor. He also attended Central Manor Camp where he served on the Board of Directors in addition to being the financial secretary. Professionally, he was employed by RR Donnelly for 30+ years. In his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering for the American Cancer Society and the United Way.
John will long be remembered for his insatiable curiosity about the world, his witty sense of humor, and his ability to make friends wherever he went. He was an avid outdoorsman with interests in hunting, fishing, bird watching, hiking and camping. He was also a long-suffering fan of the Phillies and the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. His greatest joy and passion was found in his role as a husband and father. He is survived by his three children, Matthew R. Haverstick of Lancaster, Heather E. Haverstick of Millersville and Andrew J. Haverstick of Washington Boro. John is also survived by his mother Alice E. Haverstick of Lancaster, a brother Dr. H. L. Haverstick Jr. (Sherry) of Elizabethtown, sisters Cathy I. Frey (Dean) of Lampeter, Eileen E. Cawood (Dan) of Purcellville, Virginia, S. Elaine Eppley (Arthur) of Lancaster, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received on Sunday, July 8, 2018 from 6-8PM at Central Manor Church of God, 387 Penn St., Washington Boro, PA and again on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 10-11AM, with the Funeral Service to follow at 11AM. So sorry to hear about John’s passing. I am the son of Gary Howry. My dad and John (Sticks as my dad called him both worked at Donnelley’s and enjoyed playing poker and having their annual Fishing Fool’s trip up in Canada. I am 46 years old. When I turned 18 I was allowed to go up to Canada for the trip. I will never forget one time I went the weather was warm and John decided he wanted to go for a swim. He jumped in the water and before you knew it he had us all swimming. I am so sorry for your loss!

Dear Heather, Matthew, and Andrew, We were so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. We were good friends with your mom first and then met your dad. We truly appreciated his sense of humor and his love for the LORD. We met your mom through Pastor Bo. We will keep you in our prayers. Patsy and Rita Krammes

To John’s Children: I met your father just this spring when we attended a Hospice “Growing through Grief” class. As he struggled to come to grips with losing his beloved Kimberly and to move forward, many special things about him became evident. He obviously was a devoted husband as he lovingly cared for his wife during her illness. He definitely was a loving and caring father as he talked about all of you. John mentioned going to the Fulton with his daughter since he was now a widower. He talked eagerly about plans to meet a son and finish the end of an Appalachian trail adventure with him. John seemed like a very kind, family man to those of us who only had the priviledge to know him for 4 weeks. He had not finished the classes as he called to say he was not feeling well but wished all of his classmates the “best”. With sincere empathy to all of you as you grieve the loss of both of your parents. Do reach out to relatives and friends to help you through. Terry Ayres

Dear family of John… My name is Kerry Hull Elliott and I remember many of you as we attended Lancaster Christian school together. Mrs. Haverstick, Cathy, and Eileen, please know that my heart is very saddened to hear of John‘s passing. John and I were in the same class at LCS- a very small class, and I considered him a good friend and a very kind person. As you may remember, we also spent July 4 holidays some years in the backyard of the Hull residence at 165 Conestoga Blvd. – so many fond memories! Please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you as you celebrate the life of this special person. I know we will all see him again, and we must grieve… But with hope! My sister Becky sent me this news, and along with my sister Eloise, we have good memories of our times with your family. I currently live with my husband in Centennial, Colorado where he has been an associate pastor for many years. Hugs from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to each of you!

I worked with John at RRD for many years. We both loved to solve problems in EXCEL and he would come to my desk and we would work together to solve them. He had a great curiosity for everything in life and I enjoyed discussing things with him. Very sorry to hear of his passing.
