Condolences to the Family

July 11, 2013

I took a statistics class with Dr. Meier one summer.  As a math phobic I bombed the mid-term exam, but Dr. Meier took me aside and said that I understood the problems but had let my anxiety get in the way.  He allowed me to retake the exam at home, and I earned an A for the course and was able to skip the final.  More important than statistics, though, was what he taught me about being a compassionate teacher.  In my 21 years of teaching, I always think fondly of Dr. Meier when I give a student a second chance.

Dear Kristen:  You probably do not remember me!  I worked with you at Gordinier Dining Hall in the Summer of 1978!  Just to let you know,  you, and your family are in our thoughts and prayers, during these hard times!  Hope all is well with you,  and you have had a successful life!!  Take care!! Tony.

Dear Ones,
I am so sorry for your loss.  How blessed you are to have had such a wonderful Father.  In many ways he modeled our Lord, as good fathers do.  I cannot think of your Dad without remembering your dear Mother too–they were a matched set.  The loss of people we love leaves an emptiness that is difficult to fill.  Be gentle with yourselves during this sad time.  Surround yourselves with family and friends to remember the joys and chase away the tears.  How very proud your parents were of all of you.  Your faithfulness during their time of need shows your true character.
Fondly,
Shelley Vaughn

I have very fond memories of Joe. We shared an office in Delaware House my first year at Millersville. Although Joe’s degree was in Applied Mathematics, he really had a passion for Statistics and I think I can safely say that he was the driving force behind the popularity of the Statistics program here at Millersville. I have tried to carry on that legacy since his retirement. He will always be remembered as one of the best if not the best teacher we’ve had in the Mathematics department. Professors always groaned when they were coming up on their 5 year review at the same time as Joe because his student evaluations were always the "curve breaker" for department and school averages. I’ll never forget the piece of advice that he gave me as a new faculty member. He said "Lew, you have to treat these kids like you were their father. Lay out that elementary statistics course like it is cheese and crackers for them." I have always tried stick with that advice and it has served me well. Joe will be sorely missed.

I was so sad to hear about the death of your father.  I have so many great memories of him while he was at Millersville.  He was a big help to me many times and wrote a wonderful recommendation for me when I won the Presidential Award in 1984.  He really was one of the very best that Millersville ever had and he touched many lives.  You had a wonderful mother and father.  I am sorry that I will not be able to attend the funeral.  I would have liked to have seen each of you once again and hear what you are doing.  It was a joy to have each of you in class as math students over the years and I have many good memories of those times.  I retired from Penn Manor in 2002 and from Millersville in 2004.  The years fly by so quickly.  I hope that each of you are doing well despite the sadness that you are now experiencing.  Please accept my sincere sympathy.

Your father had such a profound influence on so many lives – not only his passion and integrity, but his intellect and caring were a gift to his students.  Beyond a doubt, he is the single person who most helped me to persevere and have a successful career.  His kindness, encouragement, and delightful personality will never be forgotten.  I am so grateful to have known him and to have learned from him.  My sincere condolences to all of you.  Susan Vitale (Millersville 1979)
