Joseph Edward “Ed” Knepley, Sr., 87

Joseph Edward “Ed” Knepley, Sr., 87, of Lancaster, and formerly of Maryland and Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2024. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Pergar) Knepley. He was married for over 63 years to his beloved wife, Betsy (Orris) Knepley.
Ed was a graduate of McKeesport High School. Later, on a NROTC scholarship, he earned a BSE from Villanova University, followed by a master’s degree from The George Washington University. He served honorably in the US Navy for over 5 years obtaining the rank of Lieutenant with his last duty aboard the U.S.S. Harry E. Yarnell (DIG 17). After the service, Ed began a career at DCA/DISA Engineering where he was a respected innovator and leader. He and his team of computer scientists, experts, and communication engineers developed cutting-edge models for new Defense Communications Networks. His work was at the forefront of technology and played a critical role in advancing the capabilities of the Department of Defense’s communications infrastructure. His position was integral in the research, design, and development of communication networks, including the internet as we know it today. His contributions have had a lasting impact, not only on national security but also on the global landscape of technology and communication.
Ed also had a creative side and won numerous photography awards, was a judge for photography competitions, and dabbled in stained glass. He enjoyed listening to jazz music and played the trumpet when he was in high school. Ed also coached his son’s sports and was an avid supporter of all his endeavors.
In addition to his wife, Betsy, he is survived by his son, Joseph E. Knepley, Jr. (Carol), brothers Jim and John Knepley; 3 grandchildren: Josh (Stephanie), Caleb, and Casey Knepley; and 1 great-grandchild on the way. He is also survived and sorely missed by his 4-legged companion, Missy. He was predeceased by his daughter Suzanne Lynne Knepley and granddaughter Jessica Suzanne Knepley.
