Karen Marie Briggs, 70

August 17, 2024

Karen Marie Briggs, 70, of Lancaster, and formerly of Allentown, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on August 17, 2024. Born in Pottsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Gavaletz) Hopkins. She was married to her beloved husband Donald James Briggs for just shy of 45 years.

Karen was a graduate of Pottsville High School and worked for AT&T as a phone operator for over 20 years. She was selfless, giving, and endlessly taking care of everyone around her. She loved listening to music – especially Jimmy Buffett — and sitting by the beach with a good book, or even just people-watching for as long as the day would allow. More than anything, though, she enjoyed hosting family and friends, and was always the life of the party, with the most contagious laugh you’ve ever heard.

In addition to her husband Donald, Karen is survived by her daughter Ashley Lynne Medina (Scott), 3 grandchildren: Greyson, Bellamy, and Wesley Medina; 5 siblings: Charles “Butch” Hopkins (Bern), Patti Tropp, Maryann Bierman (Joseph), Kathleen “Kathy” Decker (partner Larry Kish), and Joanne Horvath (John); and beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please let us honor Karen’s legacy by embodying her beautiful spirit through simple acts of kindness. By spreading love and caring deeply for one another, we can honor the warmth and compassion she shared so freely with everyone lucky enough to know her. Together, let’s fill the world with the same joy and goodness that Karen brought into our lives, creating a lasting tribute to the incredible person she was.

Ashley and family, Don and Kathy Decker,
I am shocked in the passing of Karen. I met Karen and Kathy in the summer of 1969 and would keep that friendship for many years. I lived in Massachusetts and they lived in Pottsville PA. I was forced to go with my Mom to PA to visit her friends. I was introduced to Karen and Kathy and fell in love with them and their family. They were bridesmaids in my wedding and Karen is my first sons’ Godmother. As the years rolled on we got involved in our families and didn’t connect again. My love for Karen and Kathy never stopped. They helped me get through a difficult time in my life. They gave me purpose even though we were apart. I thought of them frequently even a week or two this month to the point of reaching out to her but I didn’t.
Ashley, I’m sure you know how blessed you are to have such a wonderful, caring Mom with a big personality. May you find some comfort in knowing how loved your Mom was. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
Kathy, I can’t imagine what you are going through. You two were so close. My heart breaks for you. Feel free to reach out through my email. I love you Kathy!
