I am sadden to just hear about the passing of Mr. Hoffman. Even before I had him for Earth Science, he was the dad of my Scouting friend Tim, and applied his teaching skills to teach a number of Merit Badges to the Scouts in Leola. He is a big reason for me earning my Eagle award. I appreciate the investment of his skills and time in the youth in and areound Leola. — Ken Todd

a caring, intelligent, and compassionate person. He was a gift to me and to the educational and sport

My deepest condolences to the entire Hoffman family. I have known his son Tim Hoffman since childhood and am very saddened with this news. Since I live in San Diego and won’t be able to attend the funeral, I’m hoping this message will suffice for now.
Mr. Hoffman was among an elite group of truely great teachers at Conestoga Valley High School including the late Harold Emmitt (Chemistry), Adam Brown (Physics), and Fred Johns (Math). Mr. Hoffman (Earth Science) taught in a variety of disciplines such as geology, topography, meteorology, astronomy, and even paleontology. He taught us about rocks like feldspar, quartz, topaz, and obsidian and the hardness scale. He taught us how to read topographic maps; he told us that technically, the earth isn’t round but Oblate Spheroid due to a very slight bulge at the earth’s equator. He taught us about the planets, the solar system, galaxies and deep space; the difference between light years and parsecs. He taught us about fossils, and prehistoric time periods like Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras. Mr. Hoffman took us on field trips to the Peach Bottom Nuclear Power Plant and to an area known for fossils. I remember my excitement in finding a trilobite (extinct arthropod). His tests were difficult but fair and he enjoyed teaching with his dry sense of humor with comments like “only put the correct answers on the test” and “a misspelled word is a wrong word.” He had a bumper sticker on his car that read: “Be Alert….the world needs more ‘Lerts'”. He didn’t tolerate foolishness among classmates and had high expectations of his students. And, we were only in 9th grade!
When Mr. Hoffman wasn’t teaching, he was coaching. He was my Cross Country and Track coach during my time at CV. I recall his excitement during a County track meet in 1979 when he approached us with a clipboard and exclaimed something like: “Hey look, we can win this thing!”. And win we did. Mr. Hoffman made a formidable impact on me during my high school years and I will always be grateful. He will indeed be missed.
