Lorna M. Herb, 83
January 16, 2025
Lorna M. Herb, 83, of Lancaster passed away Thursday, January 16, 2025, at her home. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Webster D. and Rosanna (Fletter) Hershey, and the sister of the late Ruth Ann Hershey. She was the longtime companion of Ralph Mathiot, III for 49 years.
In her youth, Lorna studied all types of dance and spent a summer studying in NYC before graduation from Manheim Twp. She studied piano from a young age and played beautifully.
As an adult, Lorna worked at RCA, which later became Burle Industries. Following her retirement from Burle, she took a job with the Commonwealth of PA as a liquor store salesclerk for several years before fully retiring.
Throughout her life she had diverse interests and was always learning something new. No matter her age, she never got old.
Everyone who truly knew Lorna loved her. She took a genuine interest in her family and friends. Lorna was her daughter’s best friend and shared a close relationship with her only grandson. She was always supportive of their dreams and ambitions.
Lorna loved spending time with family and friends at her vacation home on Herring Creek in Ocean City, Maryland. She felt most at peace in nature. She loved all animals and getting her hands dirty in the garden. This is reflected in her beautiful hummingbird and butterfly garden as well as the extraordinary love and care she gave to all of her dogs, especially Harley, her beloved German Shepherd with epilepsy.
In addition to Ralph, Lorna is survived by her daughter, Shelley, wife of M. Scott Oatman, and her grandson, Alexander C. Oatman.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at Riverview Burial Park, 1200 S. Duke Street, Lancaster, PA 17602. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lorna’s memory may be made to www.cureepilepsy.org or www.believebig.org.
