Margaret J. “Peggy” Eshleman, 80
December 16, 2014
Margaret J. Eshleman, 80, of Conestoga View Nursing Home passed away on December 16, 2014. She was born November 10, 1934 in Lancaster, PA on Cabbage Hill. She was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Kirchner) Reid. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Fish and Doreen Ebersole and a brother William Reid, Jr. Peggy was married to the love of her life Robert R. “Bob” Eshleman (1993) who also preceded in her in death.
She is survived by four sons; Richard Eshleman, husband of Barb, of Lewes, DE, John Eshleman and Robert Eshleman, both of Lancaster, Steve Eshleman, husband of Sandy, of Pequea, and eight grandchildren, one great grandchild.
Peggy grew up on Cabbage Hill and remembers her parents working very hard to provide for her and her siblings. Her father was a ship builder in Paisley, Scotland before coming to the United States where he then worked at Steven’s House. Her mother was born and raised on Saint Joseph Street and worked as a candy maker.
Peggy often attended dances at the YMCA where she met Robert Eshleman from JP McCaskey High School. She said “They danced the night away.” After Peggy graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, they were married at St. Anthony’s Church and later had four sons.
Peggy worked at Bell Telephone as a supervisor for ten years before staying at home to take care of her boys. She later worked for fifteen years as a 911 telephone operator at Lancaster County Control.
Peggy was a member of Saint Anne’s Catholic Church where she attended regularly. She was devout in her faith. Her favorite song was Amazing Grace, and you could always find her singing. She sang in the Glee Club at LCHS, sang in church, and enjoyed performing karokee at Conestoga View. You could always find her working in her yard. Peggy was a social butterfly, and she made friends easily and she was a kind and strong mother, loved by all.

Sorry for your loss

Dear NanNan, It’s impossible to say goodbye to someone who will live forever in my heart. I only hope to carry on your legacy in some way, your kindness, your little chuckle and smile, and the way you cared about people. You lived your life and thrived despite any challenges presented, your faith and strength was evident in how you tackled each challenge while finding joy in the little things that matter the most. It has been a long time since we have been able to sit outside and chat, talking about life and stories of the past. I try to remember every last detail of everything you have told me over the course of my life because I want to carry those memories with me forever. Just as your memory will be in my heart forever. I love you Nannan, thank you for everything. Your first grandchild, Tammy Margaret “Eshleman” Newcomer

I knew your Mom well. We spent many hours together at the 911 board. She shared many memories with me and I enjoyed working with her. The time went fast when I worked with her. She shared many pictures and stories with me. You all were still home and growing up then. Oh how she loved her family. I went to visit her a few times at Conestoga view. She was a special lady. You did a GREAT job with the obituary. I loved the walk down memory lane one more time. I now live in Elk county so I can not be at the service. I will say a special prayer for her and you all. Thanks for all the good times Peggie>>> Donna McKain 9 Front Street Benezette, Pa.

I had the pleasure of working with Peggy when she worked for the 911 Center. What a pleasant and uplifting person who always spoke highly of her family and faith. Sincerest sympathy to the family.
