Margaret R. “Peg” Whitcraft, 97

December 21, 2024

Margaret R. “Peg” Whitcraft, 97, of Lititz, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at UPMC Lititz.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Elmer E. and Edna F. (Weaver) Whitcraft.

Born and raised in Lancaster County, Peg graduated from Lititz High School (now Warwick) before earning her B.S. in Education from Millersville State College and her M.S. in Library Science from the University of Southern California. Peg further enriched her knowledge through postgraduate studies at Penn State, Temple, and Drexel Universities.

Peg dedicated her professional career to inspiring and supporting students as a librarian at Upper Moreland High School in Willow Grove, PA. She retired as Supervisor of Libraries, leaving a legacy of excellence and care. In addition to her work as a librarian, Peg coached girls’ basketball, softball, and cheerleading. Her remarkable contributions to education and athletics were recognized when she was inducted into the Northern Lebanon Hall of Fame in 2008.

In retirement, Peg continued to give back to her community. She worked part-time at a gift shop in Lititz and volunteered with Meals-on-Wheels, the Lititz Historical Museum, and the Lititz United Methodist Church library. Her generosity, kindness, and love for connecting with others shone through her thoughtful notes and cards, which she delighted in sending to friends and loved ones.

Peg was a lifelong adventurer who enjoyed traveling across Europe and exploring new places. She was a longtime resident of Luther Acres, where she formed deep bonds with her neighbors and community. Peg loved dining out, with Red Lobster and Lititz Family Cupboard being her favorite spots, and she was known for her gracious spirit and giving heart. Peg touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and friends through her dedication, generosity, and warmth. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Charles (Grace), Irene (Paul), John (Mary), and Jim (Naomi).

Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

On behalf of Peg’s family, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Luther Acres and UPMC Lititz for the exceptional care and compassion you provided her. Your kindness brought comfort to Peg, and your support meant the world to our family.

My brother, Tom Weinmann, and I (Gail Weinmann Harker) attended UMHS in the 1960’s.  Our mother, Doris Weinmann, was a long time secretary at the UM Middle School.  I remember Ms. Whitcraft as a fine lady and a great librarian.  I believe my  mother and she were friends outside of school.
