Martha M. (Reveland) Barber, 81

January 16, 2024

Martha Barber of Lititz entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, in hospice care at Penn Medicine’s Lancaster General Hospital.

Formerly of Youngstown, Ohio, Martha was born on July 16, 1942, to John & Elizabeth (Kirsch) Reveland Bodnar. She graduated from East High School in 1960, and the Choffin School of Nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse. In her early career, Martha worked at North Side Hospital and also for an ophthalmologist where she met her husband, Anthony, who came in for an eye exam. They were married on July 2, 1966, in record high temperatures as Mom always told us. They relocated a couple of times, but settled in Lititz in 1972 and made it their forever home. While raising her family, Martha was employed by Groff Bussing where she lovingly transported intellectual and physically disabled students for 14 years. She then returned to nursing at Moravian Manor Communities until her retirement in 2004.

A member of St. James Catholic Church in Lititz, Martha served as a past President of the Silver Liner’s Club, a member of the Church Council, the Cookbook Committee, helped in the kitchen for Monday Bingo nights, and served as a Eucharist Minister for 15 years. It was in this community that Martha found some of her dearest friends. They raised their families together and carried on long friendships, often having weekly dinners and movie nights. Some of them were her Earthly angels who carried her through health struggles and loss.

Martha’s greatest accomplishments were as mother to her children, Julie (Brian Batson) of Belmont, North Carolina, and Joseph (Kadie Barber) of Estacada, Oregon. She cherished her role as grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren – Madison, Jackson, Mason, and Emerson Batson, and Abigail and Elanor Barber.

Martha was predeceased by her husband, Anthony, mother, Elizabeth Bodnar, and brother, John (Jack) Reveland.

Visitation will be held from 10-11am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial held at St. James Catholic Church at 11am on January 22, 2024. Burial will be in St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery in Lancaster, PA. Please omit flowers. Memorial contributions in Martha’s memory may be made to St. James Catholic Church at 505 Woodcrest Avenue, Lititz, PA 17543.

Condolences to the Family

It is with great fondness that I remember Martha, I recall meeting her as a van driver for special needs students. Martha was more than a transportation provider, she became a dear friend to the families which she served. Years later I had the great pleasure to call Martha’s daughter Julie a co-worker. While we worked together for only a short period of time, our friendship endured. My wife Mary and I have known Martha as a fellow parishoner of St. James Lititz. The example of service to others that Martha exhibited was an inspiration for all. In later years I was privileged to see Martha at her home, and in the community. Martha was always ready to share a story about Julie, Brian, Joseph, Kadie, and her pride & joy her grandchildren. Wishing comfort to Martha’s family, cherish the blessed memories, Mike S.

This woman was an earth angel. My mother was a resident at Moravian Manor for many years. Martha was one of the only people who could begin to “deal with” her. She was always willing to help, and it took a lot of love and stamina to attend to my mother. What a joy and comfort to have had her by my side. Martha – you were such a blessing. May your eternal life give back to you the way you gave your earthly life to others.
Prayers for comfort to the family. Keeping you close in our hearts.
