Mary H. Cuba, 56
January 19, 2022
Mary H. Cuba, 56, of Lititz, died Wednesday, January 19, 2022 after a 10 year battle with breast cancer. Mary was the wife of Eric W. Cuba for almost 34 years, the mother of Alexander S. Cuba, the daughter of Myron and Monica Mickiewicz of Shavertown, PA, the daughter-in-law of Cynthia Cuba and the late Walter Cuba of Shavertown, PA, and the sister, aunt, teacher, and friend to many.
Mary was extremely blessed to be raised by her loving parents, and had an awesome childhood filled by many adventures with them and her best friend, Molly. She always enjoyed the satisfaction of a job well done, beginning with her work at age 9 at Pizza Perfect, a restaurant owned by her Dad, his business partner Bill Rineheimer, and his great high school buddy, Richard Adamchick. At the pizza place is where Mary first laid eyes on the love of her life, Eric. God blessed them with true love for almost 39 years.
Mary graduated from Dallas High School, with honors and with the friendships of Sharon, Jocelyn, Janine, Diane, Amy, and many others, and Magna Cum Laude from King’s College, Wilkes-Barre PA, where she earned degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Education. By chance, Mary found Linden Hall School for Girls in Lititz PA, while searching for a job near where Eric had his job as a Chemist. She taught math there for 31 years to many girls from around the world. She truly cared for her students and worked to help them always achieve their best. She was so lucky to have her students broaden her horizons by sharing their cultures from countries such as South Korea, Japan, Mexico, China, and many others. She was so proud of her students accomplishments, including many who went on to major in Mathematics or its applications. She always wished the very best for them and reminded them always to do good things for the world!
With a strong desire for parenthood, Eric and Mary adopted Alexander from Russia in 2002. Since then, Alex has always been the focus of their life together. Today, with God’s help, he is an intelligent, strong, and faith-filled young man.
Mary enjoyed most her time with her family. She treasured the hugs, meals, and laughs with everyone. She loved being by water. Her favorite places to visit were Saint John, USVI, where she enjoyed snorkeling, and Sanibel Island, where many hours were spent shelling. Being outside enjoying nature always uplifted her and she thanks her parents for instilling that in her.
Mary always felt very blessed by graces from God and had been at peace at times throughout her life, and most especially during her final years. She wished to thank everyone who helped her have such a great life, especially Eric, Alex, her Mom and Dad, her mother-in-law Cynthia, her brothers and sisters: Mike and Amy, Alan and Kelly, Jill and Andy, Sara and Skip and her nieces and nephews: Emma, Sean, Ryan, Jackson, Evelyn, Maddie, Dawson, Taylor, and Jade, her extended family, especially her late Gram whom she admired and looked most alike, friends, students, and colleagues, especially Claudia, who helped her through her work life. She would also like to thank the many priests, teachers, nurses, doctors, counselors, especially JoAnn, and her son’s social workers who helped her throughout her lifetime. She wanted to encourage everyone to live life to its fullest and always try to think of others and help them when you can. If you want to honor her memory, please consider doing something nice for others, giving to LInden Hall’s Endowment Fund, or giving to your favorite charity.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 24, 2022 at 11AM. at St. James Catholic Church in Lititz, PA with a visitation hour held before the Mass. A burial prayer service will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at 11AM. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carverton, PA.

To Mary’s family, friends and students, my condolences. What an incredible life she lived and the impact she had on so many. I did not have the privilege of knowing her but I too grew up near Dallas, Pa. and live in Lititz. She must have been remarkable and certainly so well loved.

Mary was so perfectly suited to her chosen profession. Her students and colleagues were always the recipients of her intelligence, kindness, and overall welcoming presence. It was a joy to teach with Mary at Linden Hall–every encounter with her was a pleasant one.
Deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

Mrs. Cuba was my 9th grade geometry teacher. she gave me so much knowledge and love during that class. she always made sure we all knew what we were doing and was always cracking jokes and just being so kind. she went to every single Vespers and concerts at Linden Hall and always congratulated all the girls. I was so sad when she was retiring because I knew her cancer had come back. I can’t wait to see her again one day in Heaven. I know she is loving life without cancer and being with God. I miss you Mrs. Cuba

We are so very sorry to learn of Mrs Cuba’s passing. She was a bright light at Linden Hall, and surely everywhere. It was such a pleasure to have her teach our daughter. She truly took an interest in her as a whole person, not just a math student. She had a wonderful way of making each girl feel SEEN and special. I am not at all surprised to learn that she was a Christian, as she really had a light from within. She was a special part of our daughter’s experience at school. We are truly sorry for your loss. Mary did all she could possibly do (and more) to share her gifts and insights with others. I am honored to know the intimate visions of her brilliant mind, the unconditional love of her heart, the undying faith of her spirituality.
Be still and know that I am God I say to her as she allows herself to rest in the arms of Jesus.

Mrs. Cuba, I walked into AP Calc AB with the lowest expectations for myself. Within only a matter of weeks, your empathy, encouragement, and steadfast belief in my, and my classmates’, abilities made all the differencel. Through your kindness and passion for the subject and your students, I came to love math (and of course, I use it every day). But beyond the math classroom, I most remember your commitment to meaningful engagement through patience, enthusiasm, and thoughtful questions. You always truly cared. You loved learning about the diverse backgrounds of my classmates. You brought humor through gental self-effacement and eternal optimism. You made Linden Hall feel like a home, even when you probably didn’t know that is what you were doing. And I think you would appreciate that my long-time boyfriend is a mathematician—so I did, in fact, “make math my soulmate and fall in love.” But, of course, I also rely on the math and life lessons you taught us everyday at school, work, and generally (and I don’t need a man to do that!).
Alex and Eric, Thank you for sharing Mrs. Cuba with us. I cannot imagine your pain, and I know her love for you both will continue to shine through, as it always has.

Dear Family of Mary,
I am so sorry for your loss, deeply sorry. I met Mary when I was a teacher at Linden Hall. Of course, she taught Math, and I taught Music there from 2014-2019.
Mary was ALWAYS there at EVERY single concert and play to support the girls. She also wrote me an email after EVERY single production and concert saying how much she enjoyed it and loved music so much. It brings tears to my eyes even now.
I remember when she was going through chemo and she let her hair grow out grey and short like mine. We felt like twins for a time.
Her light shined so brightly, and I am so thankful that I got to know her for a short period of time. I wanted to pass on how much she meant to me even in that time, and how much she touched me with her presence and joy.
I know she meant so much to her students and colleagues. I wish all who knew her to take a pause and be a little bit more like Mary.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Lobo

Mary Cuba was a beautiful bright light at Linden Hall. She loved her students and they loved her. Mr. Devey and I thought she was very special. She sure fought a good fight, and now she is in a good place, and watching over everyone. My deepest sympathy to Eric and her son. all her family and friends. My memories of her are such happy ones, and that is how I will remember her.

Mary was one of the sweetest, smartest, and most caring colleagues I have ever known. I remember her as a new (still single) LH teacher, teaching us how to spell her name using the Mickey Mouse tune. I can still do it. We were all so happy for her when she married Eric, and not just because it make her name easier! We were both in the Math department and I was endlessly impressed with her knowledge and creative methods. By some stroke of luck, she volunteered to help me with my Handbell Choir duties, and learned to direct the groups as well as helping the girls with technique and reading music. Mary was always calm, cheerful, and helpful to me and a role model to our students. I want to offer my condolences to Eric and Alex, and the rest of her loving family and friends.

I’m a Linden Hall mom. When my daughter, Mia, was in middle schhol it was the start of the school year–new classes, new teachers, new classmates. My daughter and her friend were nervous, shaking and practically in tears for their first math class. It didn’t take them long to realize there was nothing to be fearful of and think this was the funniest thing ever. “Mom, we were afraid of Ms. Cuba. Ms. Cuba!” So kind, so caring. The kind of teacher everyone should be lucky enough to have.

Rest In Peace, Mary. We will all miss you!
