Mary Vekios Efthymiades, 74

August 10, 2019

Mary Vekios Efthymiades, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, August 10, 2019. Mary was born in Lancaster and was the daughter of the late Peter and Sophia (Mastros) Vekios.

Mary is survived by her loving husband, Christopher Efthymiades. They were married in Ioannina, Greece, on August 4, 1968 and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

Mary was a devoted wife, mother, Yiayia (grandmother), daughter, sister, and aunt. Above all, Mary was a selfless, outstanding caregiver to her family and many friends who had experienced short or long-term illness. Mary didn’t just offer thoughts and prayers; Mary took action, one pot of avgolemono soup at a time.

Mary was everybody’s Yiayia.

She was a longtime member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. She enjoyed helping with the annual church bazaar, was a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the Daughters of Penelope.

In addition to her husband Chris, she is survived by two daughters and a son:, Nikki Sullivan, wife of Steve Sullivan, Sophia Efthymiades Martin, wife of Dale Martin, and Timothy Efthymiades. Mary is also survived by four grandchildren: Rhea, Evangelia, Lydia, and Gabriel; a sister, Georgia Price, and her three best friends: Terri, Marguerite, and Trudy. She was preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Rohrer.

Funeral Services will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Lancaster, PA 17603 at 11AM on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 with The Rev. Hector Firoglanis and The Rev. Alexander Veronis officiating. A viewing will be held from 9:30AM-11AM prior to the service. Interment will be in Conestoga Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Arrangements entrusted to Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. 717-560-5100

Condolences to the Family

We were so sorry to hear about Mary’s sudden passing.  She was always so kind and considerate of others.  I remember when we moved to Ridings Way in 1985; Mary called to arrange for kindergarten car pool for Jen.  It really made me feel welcome to move to the neighborhood and made it nice for Jen to make new friends.  I think my sister had gone to High School with her.  Keep your happy memories of her close to your heart.

Sorry to note your loss……I will always remember the House Call, and the years that followed.  She was a great mom, and I liked to kid her a bit.  Yasoo to all of you, and I hope to come back a Greek,

Such sad news.  What a loss to the family, the church, friends, neighbors and the community.  She always had the sweetest smile and a warm hug.  To the family, may God hold you in His loving embrace as you grieve.

O God, Who hast commanded us to honor our father and mother, look in the tenderness of Thy mercy upon the soul of our mother and forgive her trespasses. Lord grant unto me the joy of seeing her again in the glorious light of everlasting life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

I was very sorry to read of Mary’s passing. We attended grade school, junior high, and high school together. We finally reunited at our 55th high school reunion, and it was surprising to hear of her sudden passing. Mary and her family are in my thoughts and prayers here in Wyoming. My condolences to her family.
