Maxine B. Hufnagel, 97

April 14, 2025

Maxine B. Hufnagel, 97, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 14, 2025, at her Lancaster, PA Willow Valley residence.

She was the wife of the late John G. “Jack” Hufnagel with whom she shared over 56 years of marriage before his passing in 2013. Born in Warren, PA, she was the daughter of the late Orrie and Susan (Spencer) Beebe.

Growing up in the small town of Warren she worked a variety of different jobs in her early years, including working at the cosmetic counter at a five and dime, playground camp supervisor during her summers, one of her favorite jobs, and then later waiting tables at her parents’ restaurant, Beebe’s Coffee Shop.

Maxine always had a love for music and inherited her father’s musical talent. Playing piano and singing brought her so much joy. She attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she studied music. After college she taught music to elementary school children for three years. After a few years of teaching, she was ready for a new adventure and moved to Philadelphia where she worked for Philadelphia Electric Co. This is when she met Jack. They married in 1956 and first lived in Lansdowne, PA. Shortly thereafter they moved to Drexel Hill where they spent many happy years raising their children.

She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, cooking Sunday dinners and enjoyed hearing about everyone’s activities. She had a great warmth about her and loved to talk and share stories with everyone. Holidays were always special at her home, filled with music, home baked goodies, love and laughter. And she often talked about all the great memories she had of the summer vacations with her children and grandchildren at the beach. These were some of her favorite times. She was a loving and kind woman and made everyone she met feel special.

Maxine is survived by her children: John G. Jr husband of Madonna Hufnagel of Lancaster, Suzanne wife of Warren Newberry of Lititz, Joan wife of Jack Campbell of Saline, MI, Karen wife of Dan Holder of Blue Ball, PA, and Amy wife of Bill Fritsch of Exton, PA; 18 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received on Wednesday April 23rd from 1 to 2 PM at Charles F. Snyder III Funeral Home & Crematory, 2421 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA. A Prayer Service will follow at 2PM. Interment will be private in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Maxine’s memory may be made to: The David J. Newberry Supplemental Needs Trust or a charity of your choosing. If contributing to the trust, checks should be written to Charles Schwab and in the memo line, please enter “David Newberry SNT”. Please mail checks to: Faithward Advisors, 275 Hess Blvd, Ste.100, Lancaster, PA 17601.

To all of the Hufnagels,    I am so sorry for your loss.    Your Mom was such a wonderful and kind woman and a loving neighbor.  She was one of those Kenwood Road Moms that cared for all of the kids on the block and didn’t hesitate to fill her station wagon with kids for a trip to or from Aronimink Pool! All of the Farrell’s have wonderful memories of Mrs. Hufnagel and all of us are lucky to have known her.
