Nelson E. Benn, 83

March 29, 2025

Nelson E. Benn, 83, of Lancaster, was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life was filled with service, adventure, and a deep love for family. He passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at UPMC Lititz Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in East Orange, NJ, Nelson was the son of the late William E. and Ruth (Hall) Benn. He was the loving husband of Donna Ezrati, with whom he spent more than 35 years.

Nelson earned his associate degree in Civil Engineering from the Newark College of Engineering in 1961. He dedicated part of his early life to public service, first as a policeman for the Hardyston Township Police Department and later as a firefighter with the Hamburg Fire Department. Afterward, he applied his civil engineering degree by founding his own company, Manor Engineering, and later contributed his expertise at American Cyanamid, PSE&G and Andrews & Clark of New York.

Of the Methodist Faith and a man of many passions, Nelson found joy at the shore, where he loved surf fishing and admiring lighthouses. A true Chevy enthusiast and tinkerer, he had an impressive collection of cars and riding mowers. Nelson cherished family camping trips and treasured time spent with his grandchildren. An avid Brooklyn Dodgers and Washington Redskins fan, he never missed a chance to cheer for his teams.

Nelson’s memory will live on through his beloved wife, Donna; his sons, Daryll Benn (wife Diane) of Lancaster, PA and Randy Benn (wife Liza) of Aldie, VA; his cherished grandchildren—Olivia, Mitchell, Nicholas, Jason and Ryan; his brother, Clark Benn of Maryland; and his nieces Cheryl Lewis and Angela Benn-Staniszewski, and a nephew, Danny Boutillier. Nelson was preceded in death by his siblings: David Benn, Carol Boutillier and Sally Buckley.

Nelson will be remembered for his kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

The family will hold a private graveside service with a celebration of life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nelson’s memory may be sent to the Humane League of Lancaster County.
