Nelson Sears, 95
December 05, 2021
Nelson Sears threw off his mortal coil on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by Sara Alice Sears, his wife of 67 years; a daughter Loretta Racine Sears; and his sisters Anna Mae Rohrbach and Hilda Orwick (formerly Hammers.) He is survived by his son Randall and his wife Robin; his son Russell and his wife Carol; five granddaughters, a step-granddaughter and four step-great-grandchildren. Nelson was the only son of Mary Adeline Sutherland Sears and Joe Sears.
Nelson enlisted in the Navy in June 1943 and served proudly until August 1947. He was wounded during the Normandy invasion and saw combat during the Battle of the Philippines and the Battle of Okinawa. He entered Japan as part of the occupation force at the end of the war. After the war, he was reassigned and cruised up the Yangtze River interacting with both the Chinese people and units of the Japanese Army. Nelson never failed to note that the Japanese and Americans were equally happy that the war ended.
Following the war, Nelson studied voice, general acting and management. Defying the odds, he gained employment with WGAL-TV in 1949 and presented the first newscast for the fledgling station. He enjoyed a 45-year career with WGAL-TV as a newscaster and program manager. He truly loved his work and appreciated the kind words of many fans.
Nelson loved people. He was a Mason; served on the Millersville University Board of Trustees; and the board of the Urban League of Lancaster. His hobbies included music, reading, chess, beekeeping, and violin making- including carving a fiddle from a piece of the original Ryman Auditorium stage.

Just found out my good friend Nelson Sears passed away. I had the pleasure of working with him at WGAL starting in 1993 and hosting his retirement party on the TV station’s front lawn in June, 1994, when we dedicated the WGAL Sears-Singer Museum in honor of two founding employees, Nelson and Bob Singer, the stations long time business manager. I immediately hired Nelson as a part time consultant to help me, an out of place Southerner, navigate the around the Susquehanna Valley. He knew everybody and everything worth knowing, paving the way for the station’s new general manager. We were a great team, creating new avenues for community service and revenue. When I inducted Nelson into the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, some thought I was exaggerating his many attributes, when in reality I could not have fit them all into the time allotted. He was truly a man of all seasons and I was extremely lucky to have known him, and Sarah. My belated sympathies to his sons and their families. Had I known I would have been there to pay my respects.

Uncle Nelson was one increadible person! I always enjoyed when he called or needed some help at the house. I knew I was going to get atleast one, or a couple of parts , of a story or two. I never saw him with out a smile or a positive outlook no matter the issue. Everything was an opportunity. Even when he was carving his own chess set. Over and over every time he was carving the Rook the top of the castle would break off. For weeks he studied and chatted about the issue seeing it as an opportunity to learn how not to do it!! Finally he solved it by leaving the top walls long while he carved down into them. Then cut them to length. Boy was he happy. It was a topic he would go over many times as he once again succedeed at an accomplishment. Big or small, that is how he viewed his life and the things he did. Persistence and attitude were the cure all answer to anything and everything. I am so Proud to have been a relative and to have been his friend also. “Now” was always the best time to get started on anything. He will always live on trough the stories of his life well lived. We are all better from knowing him. Thank you Uncle Nelson

I will remember Nelson Sears as a soft spoken gentleman who possessed a diversity of interests and talents, including that of being my very first guitar instructor at Keyboard Music Studio that once existed here in Lancaster so many years ago. I have often reflected fondly on the patience, kind words and sincere encouragement he gave me at such a critically formulative time. My heartfelt condolences to the both of you, Randy and Rusty, on your loss. – A friend, Nelson Lawrence.

Nelson was a devoted congregant and dear friend who brought much joy and encouragement to myself and others. I so much enjoyed our times together and his supportive involvement in the West Shore BIC Church while I was there. He will always have a special place in my heart. There was no one else quite like him.
