Ozetta Marie Groff Hirschmann, 93

December 13, 2016

Ozetta Marie Groff Hirschmann went home to her Lord Savior on December 13 in her ninety-fourth year. Born in Lancaster, PA on December 28, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Newkirk and John Groff and Charles and Cora Dinkel. She was the beloved wife of Arthur K/ Hirschmann of E King Street for 64 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Charles Hirschmann and daughter, April Gammache, wife of Michael, and daughter-in-law Assumpta Hirschmann, in addition to six grandchildren: Kristina Oswald, wife of Lewie, Andrew Hirschmann and wife Heather, Colm Hirschmann and wife Erin, Luke Gammache and wife Heather, Gwendolynn Phillips, wife of Chad, and Gretel Gammache, as well as ten great—grandchildren. She was preceded in death by granddaughter, Melissa Kathleen Gammache.
A graduate of Millersville University, she taught Latin and English before serving our country in the Marine Corps during World War II as a carpenter and auditor. Ever proud of her service, she was a charter and life-long member of the Women Marines Association. She was a certified lifeguard and pilot. Her active service was followed by volunteering for the USO and owned operated the Tourist Haven tourist home in Lancaster for several decades.

A life-long lover of music and servant of God, she was an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, singing in the choir for over sixty years and served on many committees. She was a founding member of the Lancaster Opera Workshop and enjoyed symphony performances.
Any account of Ozetta would be remiss without mention of her keen wit and linguistic prowess, which will be keenly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Funeral Services will be held at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 750 Greenfield Road, Lancaster, PA 17601 on Saturday, December 17 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church in Ozetta’s memory.

Condolences to the Family

March 11, 2017

To Charles and April and family. My condlences on the passing of your mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. I grew up having known Ozetta from litle up. She was always a knid and friendly neighbor. She was a wonderful help to me when I was at McCaskey and needed help in english or related school work. I credit her with giving me the jump start I needed in high school that enabled me to eventially graduate from West Chester University, (then in ’53 when I started, West Chester State Teachers  College). Ocassionally I would give Ozette a call and we would always enjoy visiting by phone, and a few years ago, I stopped in the visit Art and Ozella when I was in Lancaster, visiting friends and family from our home in Tigard Oregon.
I will always have fond memories of Ozetta, and neighorly visits with Ozetta, Charlie and Cora Dinkle.   Don Herr

Sincere condolences from the members of the Women Marines Association.  “If the Army and the Navy ever looked on Heaven’s Scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.” (3rd stanza of the Marines Hymn). Take comfort in knowing your beloved Marine has left this life to take up her rightful place in Heaven’s detachment.

From Marbeth King Szczerban.
Dear Arthur, April, Charles and family, Your wife, mother, grandmother will long be remembered for her loving kindness to all and her beautiful voice. Es in our hearts. Her command of the English language was a learning experience for me as I often heard new words listening to Ozetta’s and Lorna’s (my mother) conversations over the years. Ozetta and Lorna were a hoot in their adventures! April, you so kindly accommodated them! And have been such s blessed in your loving assistance.  Yes, dear Ozetta will be missed greatly. Ozetta is loved and fondly lives in our hearts. (I deeply and sadly regret not visiting with her these last months.)
Sadly I will not see you today. Due to the freezing rain I will not be driving from Wilmington; however, I will call you, Art, and stop by the house to see you. Dad (Dick King) sends his condolences, too. (If you move will you please let me know where to call/visit you?)

I’m so sorry for the loss of Ozetta. She was always so kind to me from the day I first met her over 30 years ago. I loved hearing her stories about the time she was in the Marine Corps and about her life in general. I’m so glad I got to talk to her one last time a few weeks ago. She was a remarkable lady. Prayers of Comfort for her entire family.
