Pablo “Pop” Plaza, 95

July 18, 2021

Pablo “Pop” Plaza, 95, of Ponce, PR, formerly of Lancaster, PA passed away on Sunday July 18, 2021. Born in Adjuntas, PR on June 29, 1926. Pablo was the son of the late Avelino DeHoyos and the late Josefa Plaza.
Pablo was retired, he was a long time employee of the City of Lancaster as well as the Redevelopment Authority. He was an extremely hard worker and had an excellent work ethic which he passed on to all his children. Pablo often spoke about how much he enjoyed working for the City of Lancaster. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan. Another passion he passed on to his children was his love of cooking “He was an amazing cook.” He also loved farming, the outdoors, and reading the newspaper. In his later years, at his home in Ponce’s Barrio “El Salistral,” he made reading the newspaper a morning routine; Pop reading the newspaper on his porch on the street of “Callejon del Rio” became a staple in his little community.
He was a caring father and friend who never hesitated to go out of his way to help anyone in need. Most importantly, he loved his children. He was the “Leader of the Plaza Clan.” Pablo lived a full wonderful life. He will be remembered by his “HUMOR,” he loved to tell a good “CHISTE” (joke). He also enjoyed telling stories that taught us life lessons, he quite often gave most of us advice. His children will always remember this one thing he instilled in them the most “Do things on your own and if you fail, pick yourself up and keep doing it until you get it right, never stop trying.”
Pablo is survived by two siblings; Israel Plaza and Cecilia Plaza Santiago; and his children: Pablo A Plaza married to Carmen; Meida Stewart married to Richard; Edwin Plaza married to Daisy; Emery Plaza; and Frederick Plaza married to Yolanda. He is also survived by a host of loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family. Pablo was preceded in death by his wife Alicia Garcia Velasquez, siblings Rosa Plaza and Antonio Plaza; daughters Gladys Plaza and Naomi Plaza; sons Norbert Plaza and Ulises Plaza.
Pablo was of Roman Catholic Faith, a viewing was held at Shalom Memorial in Ponce, PR as well as a Catholic Funeral Vigil Service, honoring his wishes he was cremated after his service and transported by his daughter to Lancaster, PA.
Friends and family are invited to a graveside service at noon on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at St. Mary’s Cemetery 401 New Holland Avenue, Lancaster PA, 17602. Repast to follow at Plaza San Juan Bautista 441 South Lime St. Lancaster, PA 17602.
